Reaction Injection Molding Being Leading The Business
Posted: Oct 07, 2016
The thermosets used in RIM birth polymer chains that serve as strengthening backbones within the product that is being molded, that helps in providing the excellent properties when exposed to extreme temperatures. RIM produces strong, durable yet flexible, lightweight parts that are easily painted. It also features low injection pressures and low processing temperatures which makes it costly but effective solution for large scale molding projects.
The Reaction injection molding? manufacturing process involves polymer liquids that are stored in large tanks and then dispensed by high pressure and large pumps. The biggest advantage to RIM is that the large polyurethane parts are made much lighter without compromising strength, flexibility, or durability. When each part is manufactured, polymers are re-circulated from the tanks to a multi-stream mix-head on the machined aluminum mold, and back to the storage tanks in a continuous loop.
A piston is then retracted inside the mix-head which breaks the loop. The polymers are then mixed at a really high velocity to ensure proper blend. When compared to injection molding, vacuum forming, pressure forming, and cast molding, RIM is superior. While RIM is a longer process than others designed to achieve similar results, the outcome is worth the wait.
RIM can be said as the most advanced process easily for polyurethane parts manufacturing. It is ideal for producing highly designed parts of complex geometry, strong and lightweight parts, it has various advantages of quick cycle times which is typical to cast and vacuum formed materials. Whether you are in the transportation, heavy truck manufacturing or servicing, agriculture/construction, or the spa industry, parts manufactured through the RIM process can be an asset to your business.
This thinner mixture also requires less clamping forces in the RIM process lead to smaller equipment and ultimately lower capital expenditures for molds. This thermoset mixture injected into the mold has a much lower viscosity than molten thermoplastic polymers, thus, large or thin-walled products or parts can be successfully processed with Reaction injection molding?. The low temperature, low pressure process allows numerous design freedoms including variable wall thicknesses ranging and easy encapsulation of a variety materials including batteries, electrical circuitry and structural members.
RIM is 70% less expensive with think molds and a lightweight structural part without any sink and molds over metal, glass, wood, wiring, circuit boards, hardware, etc. Varying wall thicknesses on some parts, it has similar tolerances to injection molding. The flowability of the liquid polyurethane components enables to fill molds for very large parts. The size of the part that can be molded depends on the speed of the reactivity profile of the polyurethane formulation.
