A lot of people these days are afflicted by celiac disease, and that means they have to be very wary of eating gluten. Of course, many other people are not afflicted by anything at all, and they just choose to eat gluten free because it is better for them. But what exactly is gluten? And what exactly is gluten free food? That’s what this article is here to tell you.

Gluten is a substance heavily present in grains, oats, and especially wheat. It is largely responsible for the elastic texture of dough. It is a mixture of two proteins that causes illness in people suffering from celiac disease. It acts as a sort of adhesive, holding many foods together and helping them maintain their shape.

The big three food that have gluten in them are wheat, barley, and rye. However, they can also be found in Triticale and contaminated oats, so it is quite limiting when it comes to your diet.

However, there are plenty of alternatives out there, many of which are all natural and delicious. There are plenty of gluten free foods out there, which, simply put, are foods that are completely devoid of those two proteins that make gluten and bring sickness to those with celiac disease.

That said, there are both natural and synthetic gluten free foods, encompassing a great and wide range of areas. There are in fact, many types of grain foods that can be gluten free, such as oats, which are only at risk for gluten contamination rather than legitimate substance possession.

Many foods that you would not expect are actually capable of being gluten free, including popcorn and pizza. While there are many foods that do contain gluten, there are just as many that do not, and you find plenty of specialized foods to better provide gluten free alternatives.

Many companies and brands make alternate versions of usual gluten foods, such as bagels. In this way, you can still enjoy the kind of food you love while also staying away from gluten for whatever reason you desire. All you need to do to ensure that you are consuming only what you need to or what you desire is to double check the packaging for everything you eat. Almost all foods these days will label whether or not they are gluten free, so a quick check for the packaging on any particular food is key maintaining a gluten free diet.

That said, maintaining such a gluten free diet is not nearly as hard or limiting as it sounds. There are a lot of alternatives, and a lot of food types that usually contain gluten can also be made to not have it at all. Just check the packaging on whatever you buy to be sure, and you’ll have no trouble managing a proper gluten free diet, whether you do it for your own health benefits or to manage your celiac disease. One way or another you have options, and plenty of them.
