With less than three months for XAT, students are expected to pull up their socks and get ready for the D-day. Consisting of sections testing Language, Decision-making and logic, Quantitative aptitude, General knowledge and essay writing, it is referred as one of the toughest among other competitive exams. A quick update on the approaches required for each section is summarized further.

Language and Logic:

  • Reading comprehension and reason-oriented questions have a higher count in this section.
  • Emphasis should be placed on developing the reasoning skills. Testing vocabulary is based on the command over the language a person has and also usage.
  • A general reading of passages is never of any help, drawing a conclusion is necessary.
  • Practice as many mock tests as possible.

Decision making and reasoning:

  • This is one section that distinguishes
Xat from others.

  • This is a student’s perspective to the real world outside which runs on math, common sense, logic and luck. Therefore, decisions need to be made, not choices.
  • The options given are closely connected to each other and particularly pros and cons need to be analyzed before sticking to one alternative.
  • Typical situations include ethical dilemmas, financial crisis and management issues.

Quantitative and Data interpretation:

  • Strong conceptual knowledge is required for the topics in this section as they can ease out the time constraint if one manages to be fast.
  • Data interpretation looks at clear comprehension skills and the ability to keep track of the numbers as the question is being read further.
  • The data interpretation part is known to be time-consuming, hence the quantitative part should be prepared well.

General Knowledge:

  • One must regularly peruse business periodicals, magazines and editorials to keep on toes with the latest developments.
  • Staying updated on the economic updates helps attempt questions that have stats.
  • Focusing on books, geography and awards are important.
  • Stay updated on current affairs spanning across at least 6 months.

Essay writing:

  • The topic would be very open ended and would require a structured approach in the course of interpreting the title.
  • Particularly when the title consists of two aspects that need a little explanation and examination of the correlation between them, a justified inference well supported helps end the essay on an impressionable note.
  • Practicing writing essays is recommended to have a clear clarity of thoughts in the course of attempting one in the exam.

Students should start brushing up a little based on the points illustrated above and ace the exam.
