What is a stroke?

A stroke occurs when the supply of blood to the brain is obstructed or even reduced. In such events, the brain does not get the required oxygen, and the brain cells start to get damaged and die. Stroke is also known as "brain attack" and if not identified and treated early - the result can be permanent brain damage or even death. However, strokes can be prevented if you know its symptoms and have a regular check up by the physician. The doctor can evaluate the risk for stroke and help you control the risk factors.

Know the symptoms of stroke

There are certain common symptoms of stroke, like:

  1. Loss of vision or dimming in one or both the eyes
  2. Severe and sudden headache followed by rapid loss of consciousness or brief loss of consciousness
  3. Sudden loss of balance and vomiting
  4. Dizziness, which is unexplained and sudden fall.
  5. Numbness of arm, leg and face on one side of the body.

If these symptoms are experienced, it is very important to visit the doctor for further diagnosis and treatment.

Causes of stroke

This is an important factor and everyone should know about the causes of stroke in order to be aware of the functioning of their bodies. Stroke is caused by a blocked artery or the bursting of a blood vessel or even transient ischemic attack.

To know more, it is important that we understand the different types of strokes that can occur.

1. Ischemic stroke:

This is the most common stroke experienced by people all over the world. It is caused by blockages in the arteries that reduce the blood flow to the brain. Here again, there are two sub-divisions of Ischemic stroke like Thrombotic stroke and Embolic stroke.

2. Hemorrhagic stroke:

The blood leaks in the brain which eventually pressurizes the brain cells and causes damage. The blood flows as it bursts or spills in-between the skull and brain.

3. Transient Ischemic attack:

In a transient Ischemic attack, the blood flow is temporarily interrupted which is caused due to blood clots.

Treatment

After the diagnosis and examinations and tests, the doctor immediately begins treating the patient. The first move would be to allow oxygen and intravenous drip to help the patient with the right amount of fluids and nutrients. Aspirin is prescribed for those with Ischemic stroke. In case there is a clot, the doctor will prescribe clot-dissolving drugs like Alteplase that help in the prevention of paralysis. Surgery may also be performed in the case of neck artery.

Stem cell stroke treatment

While talking about Stem cell stroke treatment in India, there are only a few good health care institutions like NeuroGen Brain and Spine Institute ( NGBSI) in Mumbai that have a good rate of successful treatment. Apart from stroke treatment, stem cell treatment for Cerebral palsy treatment in Mumbai is now popular as well, and many patients are considering this treatment for the illness. The stem cell therapy is getting more popular as it leads to a faster recovery after stroke and the restoration of brain damage to a great extent. The therapy also helps in greater improvement with rehabilitation processes like speech therapy, physical therapy and occupational therapy, which improves the speed of recovery. Basically, the stem cells repair the damaged cells as they are directed towards the damaged tissue where they start repairing and healing the tissues. Injecting stem cells into the brain can help restore motor functions that have lost the ability to talk, walk and move around. In fact, Mesenchymal stem cells taken from the bone marrow can boost brain function. After a few days tests are taken again to diagnose the improvement in the patient. Furthermore, depending on the condition of the pain, second transplantation may be suggested. The improvements can be monitored depending on the age of the patient, the damage caused and type of stroke.

Conclusion

Stem cell treatment has yielded encouraging results and increased the hopes of the patients who are seriously affected by stroke. The new researches and therapies are now widely accepted by doctors and patients all over the world.
