The Arusha Hotel is believed to be one of the oldest hotels in East Africa, and it was set up way back in 1894. It has endured many renovations to transpire today as one of the leading hotels in the fast growing city of Arusha. From its chief vantage point at the famous Clock Tower roundabout and overlooked by the majestic shadow of Mount Meru, this is the finest place to stay in Arusha.

Arusha is encircled by Africa’s most famous landscapes and national parks. Situated below Mount Meru on the eastern edge of the eastern branch of the Great Rift Valley, it has a mild climate and it is close to Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, Olduvai Gorge, Tarangire National Park, and Mount Kilimanjaro, as well as having its own Arusha National Park on Mount Meru.

Year 1927

This year marked a keystone in The Arusha Hotel’s history, when American banker, and personal friend of Teddy Roosevelt, Kenyon Painter, purchased the property. Its magnificent inaugural in December 1927, witnessed the Prince of Wales as guest of honor. Over the years, it developed as the chosen resting place for many famous guests, including Baron Von Blixen (of Out of Africa fame) and John Wayne during the filming of Hatari.

In very recent years, the Arusha Hotel has received many high-profile visitors including President Clinton, Hollywood icons Will & Jada Smith, actress Jessica Biel, pop star Shaggy and South Africa’s singing legend, Miriam Makeba.

Service Offerings

Hotel Arusha has 86 rooms offering three levels of accommodation – Superior, Executive Deluxe and our Suites – depending on your requirements.

  • Superior rooms: Superior rooms have wonderful views either out over nearby Mt Meru or across five acres of gardens. Double or twin rooms are available and we also offer inter-connecting rooms for families. All superior rooms have en-suite bathrooms, with a combined shower and bath, plus a basin and toilet.
  • Executive Deluxe rooms: Executive Deluxe rooms have fantastic views over the gardens, with double or twin rooms being available and larger beds than the standard rooms. All Executive Deluxe rooms are en-suite with a separate bath and shower as well as a basin and toilet.
  • Suites: Suites in the hotel offer an extra seating/office area and bathroom facility. In the main hotel building, the Suites have a separate seating area with fridge, bedroom and two bathrooms. In the Hotel’s new wing, it has two suites, which offer an open plan living area with two bathrooms.

All rooms are fitted with tea and coffee making services, hairdryers and conveniences. 24-hour room service is available in all rooms, with 24-hour beverage facility. Mini Bars and ironing equipment can be provided on request.

Dining and Bar

The Hotel has one main restaurant and experienced chefs from across the world. It offers African, Continental, Italian, French and of course the deluxe Indian cuisine in Arusha.

The Parachichi Restaurant

Overseeing the gardens, the Parachichi Restaurant, which means ‘avocado’ in Swahili, is the impeccable destination for breakfast, lunch or dinner and with the magnificent climate, the open-air terrace offers a serene venue.

The Hatari Bar

From sunrise until late, the Hatari Bar was titled after the famous 1960 safari film epic ‘Hatari’, predominantly as the bar was the preferred watering hole of its prominent male actor, John Wayne, during his stay in Arusha.

A comforting and relaxed bar, perfect for cocktails at sunset, coffee over lunch or after dinner cognacs, it also offers an all-day menu with light snacks and small meals. After hours, food and drink can be ordered in the upstairs lounge or through room service.
