Careful designs and operation can eliminate the chances of metal contamination and thus, Metal Detectors are seen as a crucial part of the manufacturing process and processing lines to locate and reject the contaminated products. A Metal Detector is placed in the production lines so that the products flow through an aperture inside a detector house. As the products enter the detector house, the sensors detect the contaminants immediately. The sensors further send a signal to the reject device for the removal of the contaminants.

Proper installation, operation and maintenance of the Metal Detectors is therefore necessary to ensure a long term performance by them to detect and reject contaminated materials. So, here are some tips that will help you to achieve a long term efficient performance.

Useful Tips For Proper Operation and Maintenance Of Metal Detectors

  • Mount your detector in such a way that it has minimum vibration as even a low intensity vibration can affect the detector’s sensitivity to detect and reject contaminated materials. Even, ensure the device is not mounted attached to any equipment that can cause vibration such as mixers; feeders, etc. Enable the feature of recognizing and cancelling out vibration signals in your Metal Detectors.
  • Make sure that your detectors are not receiving any noisy or rippled power as it can affect the detector’s ability to sense the signal changes. Metal Detectors are designed to detect even the smallest signal changes due to the contaminated products but any kind of noise in the power lines can affect the detectors’ ability to detect contaminants efficiently.
  • Variable frequency AC drives emit a lot of electromagnetic noise confusing the Metal Detector’s sensing device to reject wrong products. They are used to control the speed of processing equipment but if they are affecting the Metal Detector, then turn them off immediately. You can however, also use an external noise suppressor in your device to remove the electromagnetic noise.
  • Ensure that the conveying system is not contaminated with any metal object. Conveyor belts are typically the main source of contamination for the products. Therefore, regularly check the belts of your conveyor along the production lines. Regular monitoring and maintenance of the Metal Detectors is necessary to ensure excellent performance.
