Did you know that a Lebanese businessman based in London spent £352,000 for a registration plate that said simply 1 D? Or that the DVLA or Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency actually raises immense amounts of money for the Treasury with its auctions of personalised number plates? Interesting isn`t it? But then such is the appeal of personalised number plates.

Why buy custom number plates?

This is such a unique way to make a statement about your car. People opt for such plates because it gives them a chance to:

  • Hide the age of their car.
  • Enhance their social status.
  • Express their personality a bit more.
  • Have a bit of fun as well.

Indubitably, getting hold of number plates that make a splash on the road is a hugely fun business.

How should you do it?

One of the easiest things you can do when it comes to number plates is to go with an on online seller of the same. Such a seller should also:

  • Be registered with the DVLA.
  • Offer help with the registration process.
  • Be a member of the Registration Numbers Club.
  • Have excellent after-sales support too.

Once you have found such a seller you simply have to use an interactive tool to configure your number plate.

Choosing your plate

Take a lot of time and put in a lot of thought here! Two reasons for doing this:

  • First - it is going to be an expensive option! Depending on the number plate that you have chosen, it could go up to even more than £6500 or so.
  • Second - it has to reflect what you want it to reflect. For instance, if you want your number plate to say CAT, you can find 'CAT 1V' and 'C4 TFJ'.

There is an online tool that can help you generate the options rather easily. Simply type in the term or prefix or number you want in your car. So if it is 'cat' for some, it may be 'ice' for someone else or maybe even one`s own name. For instance, typing in 'Gary' could result in GAR 140Y or N60 GRY being available to you.

You can then look through the list of options that come up and choose according to the appeal and price of the plate.

Looking through the options

There are over 45 million options available and this is great news indeed because you are sure to find something that is perfect for your desire. You could look for Prefix style or Current style or simply do a broad based search.

Prefix style is a combination of initials/letters and numbers. So 'Peter' can be written as P3 TER. Current style or new style number plate is also a combination of letters and numbers but offers a wider scope. You can come up with something really eye-catching here. For instance, BO55 to make you look like a Boss!

You could also sign up for newsletters and get alerts on the auctions that the DVLA conducts every now and then and see if there is a number that you would love to have.
