Informally referred as Dhollywood, the Gujarati cinema or Gujarati film industry, is one of the major regional and vernacular film industry of Cinema of India associated with Gujarati language. The industry dates back to 7 April 1932, when the first Gujarati film Narsinh Mehta was released. After flourishing through the 1960s to 1980s, the industry saw a decline. The industry is revived in recent times. The film industry has produced more than one thousand films since its inception. The Government announced 100% entertainment tax exemption for Gujarati films in 2005 and policy of incentives in 2016.

The Gujarati Iconic Film Awards 2016 is a platform to bring actors, directors, script writers, singers theatre artists, people behind the camera, assistants and other crew to be known for their contribution to the growth of the industry so far. This is just the beginning for the Gujarati film industry. For decades, even Guajarati's who live in Gujarat’s cities did not watch Gujarati films and as a result filmmakers failed to adopt new technologies. However, things have been changing for the last two or three years, especially after the success of new urban movies released within last two years. Nowadays The Gujarati film industry is growing strong and very quickly, and the producers and directors are passionate and enthusiastic when it comes to making and releasing films.

We have bifurcated special categories. There are jury panel from different fields like veteran Gujarati actors, Bollywood personalities, people from the media, Gujarati writers, corporate honchos, our company’s president, advisory and sponsors.

The Gujarati iconic film finds pride in being the largest regional movie industries in the country. The issues of modernization were largely used to develop storylines of many Gujarati movies; family relationships and Indian culture also remained two other prominent genres. The film industry has produced more than one thousand films since its inception.

Also, we are glad to announce that GIFA has signed MOU with Govt. of Gujarat for development of Cinematic Tourism. Our special thanks to Mr. Yogesh Gadhvi (Head of Gujarat Rajya Natya and Sangeet Academy) and well known Gujarati singer Mr. Avind Vegda who have been a constant source of inspiration and support.
