Pedestrian Safety Starts with You!?
Posted: Jan 20, 2014
The number of pedestrian - motor-vehicle accidents in California is constantly growing. The reason for this is not only that the number of cars per capita is rising but also because people are being more negligent when it comes to roadside safety. Only 2 out of 5 pedestrians interviewed admit that they look around when crossing at green light, for instance. Only 1 in 5 parents forbids his child to play outdoors in a busy neighborhood full of high-traffic roads, etc. Pedestrian negligence cases, however, can lead to some severe injuries and may require months of medical rehabilitation before a full recovery is reached. In order to protect ourselves from such a disaster we need to take the responsibility in our hands. Here is how to do it:
Stay out of the street!
- Always walk on sidewalks.
- Be careful when you move around parking lots without your vehicle. Make sure you are visible to the other drivers who are looking for a place to park.
- Do not let your kids play on the street! If your yard is too small for playing football then you better not buy them a ball. Stick to indoor toys and games. If your children like playing outdoors then make sure you take them to the local stadium or to a playground they can be safe at. It will not take much of your time and you can feel safe knowing that your kid is not in danger of being involved in a vehicle-pedestrian accident.
Cross streets safely!
- Always cross at corners and use crosswalks. Crossing diagonally in the middle of the street should never cross your mind, especially when you are with kids.
- Always stop to look around a few times before crossing a street, even if the light is green.
- When you see a car approaching the crossroad you intend to cross do not hurry up to run when the green light is just about to switch to red. You never know whether the driver has seen you and whether he/she is capable of reacting that fast.
