Awesome Tools For Every Mechanical Engineer

Today in this blog topic we shall discuss the awesome tools that every Mechanical engineer plays with. The mechanical genius plays well with their tools to design and innovate.

Here I listed some of the coolest tools I think every mechanical engineer should possess:

Calipers

I was only 9 years old when I first time played with a pair of callipers. I went to my dad’ factory unit, where an engineer picked a pair of calipers and showed me that measuring the thickness of my hair could be possible with the help of callipers.

Three-thousandths of an inch thick. And that came as a pretty cool thought to me. We only know that a ruler can help us measure with precision down to might be a 1/16th, or a 1/32nd of an inch. But a good pair of callipers can measure within.0005". Isn’t that amazing? It’s a useful tool for measuring inside diameters, thicknesses, outside diameters and depth.

Dial Indicator and Force Gauge

The dial indicator and force gauge, are useful on their own, but very potential in a pair. The force gauge’s function is to measure applied force, but the dial indicator’s purpose isn’t quite clear. You can conclude that dial indicator is very useful for measuring the change in position, say displacement as small as.001" and a really good one will measure up to.0001". And as an engineer, you know that the importance to detect small displacements is significant for aligning shafts or verifying whether a motion can be repeated.

And when they come together, they could be used to measure force and displacement, which helps in the measure of stiffness.

Chapman Set

They come in different sets, but my personal favorite is that of Phillips heads and Allen wrenches. It’s more significant than a very efficient screwdriver because it comes with a little ratchet attachment that fits the tips and makes it possible to work in tight spaces that no screwdriver could ever reach.

Mirror on a Stick

Mirror on a Stick like the one a dentist uses or a better one that has an adjustable angle. Ley your hand one and check for things like screws that fell loose during vibration testing, part damage, or other such silly accidents.

Leatherman

Last but not the least. You need a pocket knife. A Leatherman comprises of a knife and a pair of pliers and that alone makes its worthy tool. A few Leatherman comes with a bottle opener and corkscrew, that could help you with added advantage if all engineering work gives you a sudden thirst Wink!

Check out what’s in your tool box and what you missed.

We conclude here.
