In this article our focus will be on the various Czech language courses together with the facilities enjoyed by students studying in the language. But first let us have a look at the basic structure of the higher education.

Curriculum and structure

The content and quality is designed by the Accreditation Commission and then approved by the Ministry of education, youth and sport which is the governing body. The Czech Republic provides both university and non-university type of education. The first type of accredited degree course is offered at three levels.

Bachelor’s Degree

Takes 3-4 years

Successful candidates may continue with the Master’s degree or get into a job

Master’s Degree

May be taken up as a follow-up programme (1-3 years) or as a full time programme (4-6 years)

It concentrates on attaining and application of knowledge together with the cultivation of the innovative faculty.

Doctoral Programme

Taken up by graduates from Master’s programmes and lasts about3 years.

It stresses on the inquisitive and creative development of the mind

The above programmes end with a state-level exam and include the presentation of a thesis. Publication of the doctoral thesis is mandatory.

Organisation of the studies

The academic year is divided into two semesters or terms:

TEACHING PERIOD- mid-September-mid-February (winter semester)

Mid-February - mid-May (spring semester)

EXAMINATION PERIOD- Jan-mid May (winter semester)

mid-May – end of June (spring semester)

Mode of assessment

The frequency of assessing student’s achievements varies from subject to subject.

In some cases, a partial exam has been introduced after each semester.

In other cases again, a comprehensive exam is taken mostly after the end of a module.

The performances are assessed by a system of credits or points.

Since the European Credit system is very much accepted and everywhere it makes the transferability of the students within the system very easy.

The non-university bachelor’s programme provides a higher education diploma or a supplement to it on completion.

Being done with the higher education we will now move to the various language courses offered by the public and the private institutions.
