The Nissan Qashqai is one of the best selling small SUVs throughout Europe. It has been a success on a smaller scale here in Australia and now we have a new model to play with. The 2016 Nissan Qashqai ST is the baby in the range, but it has a host of useful features and an attractive entry level price point. Let’s see what all the fuss is about and how much you can get for your money.

Where Does the Qashqai ST Sit in the Range?

The Qashqai under test here is the entry level Qashqai ST, which is priced at $25,990 before on roads. There is also another petrol model, the Ti at $34,490 and a pair of diesel models, the TS which is $33,990 and the TL at $39,990. All of these cars are two wheel drive models and only the petrol ST and Ti cars get a six speed transmission as standard. This particular Qashqai ST has a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), but that is an optional extra.

Generous Equipment Levels:

One would expect to find a sparse amount of equipment on an entry level model, but that is not the case with the Qashqai ST. Some of the highlights, include features such as cruise control, a rearview camera, LED running lights, a 5" infotainment screen, leather accented steering wheel, 17" alloy wheels, and a sporty rear spoiler. Upon close inspection, you can see where a few corners have been cut to save money, unlike the more expensive models the door handles are coloured silver and not chrome. Some of the silver trim is missing around the fog lights, and halogen headlights with plastic featured instead. Overall, the equipment levels are very impressive for an entry level car at this kind of price.

The Driving Experience:

Under the bonnet, you find a 2.0 litre petrol engine that produces 106 kW of power and 200Nm of torque. This is paired on this car with a CVT and gear changes feel assured and intuitive. Only a light touch across the pedals is necessary to achieve your goals. This a front wheel drive car, and as such it excels on highways and around town. The ride is sophisticated and smooth, considerable efforts have been made to reduce engine and wind noise. The cabin is a great place to be with nice wide seats and a comfortable driving position. There is plenty of storage, USB, Aux and 12v outputs and the 5" screen gives you access to the NissanConnect apps.
