The Nissan X-Trail 2016 has been a great success in Australia, where it has gained plenty of fans. The 2017 update will see a significant facelift for this model, and it has been confirmed that it will be available in Australia. What new features will this new Nissan X-Trail bring to the table, will it be a purely cosmetic upgrade? Let’s take a look at what we will have to look forward to.

The Unveiling in America:

In the US the Nissan X-Trail is known as the Rogue, this week an updated 2017 model was unveiled. This revision to the much loved SUV showed a bold new vision aesthetically, but it also added some useful new features, such as an automatic tailgate, adaptive cruise control, emergency braking with pedestrian detection and 18" alloy wheels. The automatic tailgate is particularly interesting; it is operated using a motion sensor that is located underneath the rear bumper.

A Bold New Aesthetic:

One of the main things that we were expecting was some kind of facelift. It’s fair to say that the 2017 Nissan X-Trail has gone a little bit further than anyone expected. There is a wholly new version of the iconic front mounted V-motion grille. The headlights have undergone a total revision, there are new front and rear bumpers to admire, and the tail light graphics are upgraded. Inside the cabin, there are new features, such as a new flat bottom steering wheel, an updated centre console, a revised gear shift knob, new seating fabrics, and new trim finishes. The result is a worthy addition to the Nissan lineup, a car that will turn heads and project a worthwhile design ethos.

The Hybrid Engine System:

This new X-Trail has a hybrid engine system that is quite an interesting development. The first element is a 2.0 litre, four cylinder petrol engine that generates 105 kW of power and 195 Nm of torque. Next to this powerplant, there is an electric motor that generates 30kW of power and 160 Nm of torque. Both of these units are paired with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), and the electric motor has clutches positioned on either side of it. The combined output of these two powerplants is 131kW, which is an increase of 4kW on the rest of the non hybrid range. The lithium-ion battery pack does require additional storage, and as a result the boot capacity has dropped by almost six litres. As one would expect, fuel economy has increased by 1.2L/100 km to 6.9L/ 100km for the front wheel drive hybrid. There is an all wheel drive variant, and that has an economy of 7.1L/100 km because of the need to drive additional wheels.
