10 Bright Ideas for a Sparklingly Clean Kitchen
Posted: Nov 23, 2016
When it comes to home cleaning, the kitchen is usually one of the more daunting tasks. The various spills and stains that result from cooking inevitably make it a big job. But fear not! As the experts in home cleaning, at Helpling Melbourne, we’ve created a list of our top tips for kitchen cleaning to help you breeze through the mess.
Clean the grimy oven: Create a paste with water and baking soda and cover the inside of the oven then leave it to stand for at least 12 hours. Wipe off the dried paste (you can use a spatula where it has dried a little tougher) and spray vinegar where residue remains. Then wipe with a damp cloth for a spotlessly clean oven.
De-grime your microwave: Fill a microwavable bowl halfway up with water, slice a lemon in half and squeeze into the water. Drop the lemon halves into the water and let the microwave run for a couple of minutes. Leave the door shut for a few more minutes, then carefully remove the bowl. The steam from the lemon and water will loosen the dirt, allowing you to wipe away the grease and grime with ease.
Tackle lingering food odors: Leave out a small bowl of baking soda overnight after cooking food with a strong smell (fish or curry, for example). Baking soda reacts with substances as an acid or a base, so it neutralizes most unwanted smells in the kitchen.
Wash more than just the dishes in the dishwasher: Certain kitchen items are perfectly fine to be washed in the dishwasher. Refrigerator shelves and drawers, oven knobs, the oven hood and light switch covers (on a medium temperature) can all be cleaned in the dishwasher.
Clean and unclog the drain: Pour boiling water in the drain, followed by half a cup of baking soda and the same amount of vinegar. Loosely replace the plug and leave the soda and vinegar to react for an hour to loosen the dirt and grime. Finally pour in more boiling water to rinse out the drain.
Remove fingerprints on stainless steel: Glass cleaner works really well for getting rid of fingerprints from stainless steel appliances. Spray a small amount on a microfiber cloth and wipe the area with fingerprints in a circular motion until the prints have gone. Rinse the cleaned area and towel-dry to finish.
Get grime off small appliances: Use baking soda to get the grime built up on small steel appliances like the toaster and kettle. Simply dip a damp sponge into baking soda and apply to the surface of the appliance.
Clean wooden cutting boards: Sprinkle the chopping board with coarse salt and scour the surface using the cut side of half a lemon. Leave it to sit for a few minutes, then scrape away the salt and lemon and rinse the surface with a wet sponge.
Homemade garbage disposal cleansers: Chop a few lemons up into small wedges and put one into each mold of an ice cube tray. Fill the molds with white vinegar to just before the rim so they aren’t overflowing then freeze. Once frozen, put the frozen cubes into a sealed freezer bag so as not to expose them to food odors. Drop a couple of these into the garbage disposal every 2-3 days to tackle unpleasant smells from the garbage disposal.
Get cooked-on spillages off hob top: Mix baking soda with hydrogen peroxide to make a paste, then using the rough side of a sponge, scrub the cooked on stains with the paste. You should wear rubber gloves as hydrogen peroxide can irritate the skin.
