High Quality Kitchen Cabinets Are Cheaper In the Long Run
Posted: Nov 23, 2016
Most people don’t understand the importance of cabinet quality until they get saddled with a low-quality product. Cabinets are used almost more than anything in your house, especially your kitchen cabinets. They are opened and closed multiple times a day, which can quickly wear down on low quality parts such as the door, shelves, and especially the hinges.
A highly-used cabinet door that is quickly hinged to a low-quality side panel will likely start to fail after a mere year or two. If this happens with just a few of the cabinets installed, you can find yourself spending as much to repair and maintain your cabinets as you did when you initially purchased them. Now you’ve spent twice as much for bad cabinets, which will likely only continue to fail, and require more time and money investment
This problem can easily be avoided with the right cabinetmaker. A focus on craftsmanship and quality over speed and cheapness is the ultimate investment for your kitchen. Properly built and installed cabinets will last for decades, and will look just as good as the day they were installed. This increases the value of your home without the worry of having to throw away more money to keep that value.
Cabinetmakers accomplish this by not taking shortcuts on cheaper materials that won’t contribute to the aesthetic of the cabinet, but will make them last much longer. For instance, cheaper cabinetmakers will use a 3/4" thick material for the sides, bottom, top, and shelves of the cabinet. Just increasing this to 5/8" thick (a 1/8" increase) will improve the strength of the wood by 77%. They will often go even cheaper for the back panel, using as thin as a 1/2" panel. This should be no less than 3/4", which ensures a much stronger product that is also truly square. It doesn’t make the cabinet look better necessarily, but makes all the difference in making a product that lasts. These Calgary kitchen cabinets are an excellent example.
Small details like this are what truly make the difference between cabinets lasting decades, and needing to be replaced in a matter of years. Opting for high quality cabinetmakers that won’t cut corners or cheap out on materials will ensure the next cabinets you install will also be the last.
