In any form of visual presentation, aesthetics plays a crucial role. Several studies have shown a direct correlation between content effectiveness and the aesthetic appeal in its presentation. Now, the question is- what makes or mars the visual appeal of a poster, leaflet or brochure? The answer is simple- it is the graphic design. In simple terms, Graphic Designing refers to the art and science of presenting graphic content in such a logical way that it is appealing, meaningful and effective in delivering the message to the target section.

Graphic Designing is a blend of art and science. While it is the creativity of the designer in planning the layout that forms the art portion of it, there are certain standard principles that contribute to the science aspect of it. Here, it must be mentioned that Graphic Designing is not something that originated just recently; one can find its evidences in the remains of medieval period although the name was not coined at the time. Now, we all know what to refer to the tricks, tactics and techniques of visual presentation.

Principles Of Graphic Design

"CRAP" is the word that summarises the four governing principles for Graphic Designing. The acronym may amuse you but you cannot dare to think of preparing a layout and filling it with visual elements without following the crap principle. Here are the four rules discussed briefly.

  • Contrast: The rule says if you present two things that are not similar they should better be entirely different from each other. The technique is very effective in catching the attention of the viewer. You can create contrast by use of different font styles and sizes, use of different colours, etc.
  • Repetition: In a multipage document or a website, repetitive use of styles and visual elements leads to a greater degree of cohesion and consistency in the whole presentation.
  • Alignment: Our mind responses favourably when the elements in a presentation line up. Even the spacing should be equal for symmetric spacing.
  • Proximity: Closeness of related objects is also very important. For example text heading should in proximity with the text.
