Today counselling courses in Mumbai are in great demand. But as with trying hands on anything new, a new psychological counselor as well despite undergoing a professional certificate course in counselling tends to make mistakes. They often end up committing errors due to their ignorance or being over confident that they can handle any situation that goes out of control.
Common errors that they make
-
Too much advice and not much listening- In fact, this is the most common error that a counselor commits no matter their experience in the field. Rather than patiently listening to their clients' problems they jump to conclusions by offering them too much advice
-
Impatience- Often counselors are impatient in nature. They assess a client quickly and has a reading that is fairly accurate as to what has contributed to their problems as well as what are the changes that they need to make. The impatient counselor quickly jumps to the healing
-
Closed question- Often a counselor kills the conversation in the middle and changes the topic. But when they ask a lot of questions to their clients in one response they become confused which to answer
-
Projecting- a counselor may have a common experience or issue, but to assume that their client will have the same experience as theirs instead of listening from their point of view is a common error that counselors commit
-
Not giving scope for silence- a counselor has a tendency of responding promptly either because they are afraid of experiencing some silence or wish to say something. In fact, they should take a moment prior to speaking in order to be certain that their client has finished speaking as well as wait till they look back at him
-
Getting solution oriented at the first go- to get solution oriented especially on the very first session indeed is premature. The fact is if a counselor can solve his client’s problem in an hour the client himself probably can solve it. Most people come with symptoms of bigger issues to the session so the counselor instead of fixing the problem should be mindful in discovering it
-
Stagnation- a good counselor is not born from attending a certificate course in counselling alone. The biggest problem is simply after receiving a degree they feel that they know everything about the Psychology without realizing that this is merely a good start. The key is to stay updated with all that is taking place in their field. It is vital for them to be open minded and stay current
-
Denial of personal triggers/make-up- No human being is perfect, everybody has flaws. Even the counselor may have flaws which they should be comfortable with but often they deny this and become judgemental with their clients and show their attitude by telling the client why they cannot get better, perform the right thing and become a great individual like him.
The bottom line is, despite undergoing the best counselling courses in Mumbai, one cannot become a perfect counselor. There are certain points they need to keep in mind to keep away from the aforementioned pitfalls in their further sessions.
