How to study co-ordinate geometry and trigonometry during JEE Preparation

Coordinate geometry is an important part of maths in JEE Main course. It can really have a positive effect on your rank. Each year in JEE maths paper, we have around 20% to 25% of total marks of maths from this part. Among the coordinate geometry, nearly 50% of total questions are related to straight line and the circles.

Coordinate geometry is one of the most interesting and vital topics of the mathematics syllabus of JEE. It is the most scoring topic in mathematics. Applications of coordinate geometry are spread through different fields of maths like calculus, trigonometry, dimensional geometry etc. and also have application in physics as well as statistics.

How to prepare co-ordinate geometry for JEE Advanced:

After coming across straight questions in JEE Main, it is now the time for you to gear up for the difficult and trickier ones. Co-ordinate geometry unit in JEE Advanced includes Basics of Co-ordinate geometry, pair of straight lines and Conic sections and straight lines.

The first step you should do is choosing the right book consisting of problems of good level. Choose books in which the concepts are explained in a descriptive way and questions are divided as per the difficulty level.

Start understanding the concept. JEE checks your basics. Without this basic step, it is impossible to score high. So, make sure your concepts are very clear.

  • Try understanding things by visualising it: Feeling the topic rather than memorising the stuff is something that plays a vital role in
cracking JEE Advanced.
  • You should learn to derive a concept from different chapters and utilize in such a manner that it eases the things. Sometimes practice Algebra, sometimes trigonometry so that you can try solving problems in different ways. These techniques should be kept in mind and make sure you revise these things before each practice session. Once those theories get settled in your mind, it will be very easy to recall them.

Solve a lot of problems is the mantra. However, there is a twist here. Just solving is not going to help you. Everyone is good in doing that. Try something different to be a step ahead of them.

  • You will find lot of formulae and relations in Co-ordinate geometry. Most of them will be same and will most of the time confuse you. Therefore, it will be beneficial for you if you start practicing things by writing on a chart in a comparative way.
  • Don’t take the practice sessions lightly. Initially it will take too much time for you to solve the problems of Co-ordinate geometry. So, it becomes important to keep a watch on how much time you spent on each of the problems and try new methods to improve it.

You will definitely become an expert in this unit of JEE by following the below mentioned tips:

  • Never practice questions in coordinate geometry without drawing any figure.
  • You should have important tips on your fingertips which might prove to be beneficial in many of the objective problems.
  • If possible, try to make a separate notebook for the formulas. In that notebook, make a note of all the important formulas and go through it on a daily basis.
  • Try to memorize as much formulae as you can.
  • Try to solve a question many times before you refer to its solution.
