Peptide is more widely employed not only in pharmaceutical field for its being easily absorbed, also for its flexibility as relatively small compound compared to antibodies and proteins. Various peptide syntheses are developed to facilitate the practical usages in pharmaceutical and life science development.

Fluorescence microscopy is applied to counting, locating even tracing cell molecules. Protein is an often pictured substance in this kind to learn the activities’ of cells. Traditional fluorescent labeling to achieve this goal are firstly protein, then antibody. But both failed to complete complicated tasks and result in obscure pictures or low selectivity.

Though with enhanced ability to combine with proteins, the general performance of antibody is totally out of average standard as the size of antibody themselves are still too large for the target molecules in most cases.

To address the issue and get better result from fluorescent microscopy, a research team JMU (Julius-Maximilians-Universität) cooperated with another team from the University of Copenhagen put some effort in finding a better solution. Great breakthrough was made as a result. They tried peptide as the novel loaded substance for fluorescence. With relative small size and some being cell-penetrating (cell-penetrating peptides), peptides can reach wider places. Furtherly, peptides are rich in variety, thus more types of target molecules can be combined and labeled with fluorescence. More importantly, with peptides as the intermediates for fluorescent labeling, the tracing of cell molecules is much easier.

The team has successfully conducted the novel method on their researches, and result turned to be very exciting. Peptides probes will be widely made use of in fluorescence microscopy for many other protein activities tracking, which will be a great advance for drug development and discovery and also for other life science studies.

With easy access to custom peptide synthesis, the cost of peptide fluorescence microscopy won’t be very high, enabling wider spread of the new method.
