Rs 2,000 and Rs 500 currency notes issued by RBI bear new look, improved features

The next step in the government's demonetization exercise was the introduction of new Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 denomination bank notes. The new Indian currency notes are quite distinct from older notes and come in a new slimmer size and an altogether new design. However, some of the older characteristic elements such as the image of Mahatma Gandhi, the Gandhi watermark, and the security thread and language panel still exist. It is interesting to note that in the new notes the image of Mahatma Gandhi is a mirror image of that in earlier notes. Another distinctive feature of the new currency notes is that they bear the signature of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor Urjit R Patel. The Rs 2,000 note, which is a first under the denomination, will be called the 'Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series' and has the motif of the low-cost mission to Mars, the Mangalayan, on the reverse.

The base color of the note will be magenta and the size of the note will be 66 mm by 166 mm. See through register with the denominational numeral 2,000 which can be seen when the note is held up against light. There is a horizontal rectangle with 2000 in raised print on the right. The new design in the Rs 500 denomination will be in a different color, size, theme, design and location of security features. The note, measuring 63 mm by 150 mm will be in a new color --- stone grey and the predominant theme will be Delhi's Red Fort. The features will include ascending size of numerals in the number panels, bleed lines and enlarged identification mark. The numerals in both the numbering panels of banknotes will be in ascending size from left to right, while the first three alpha-numeric characters will remain constant in size. The banknotes of Rs 500 denomination will have five angular bleed lines in three sets of 2-1-2 lines on the obverse in both, the upper left and the right hand edge of the banknote.
