Silk is a natural fibre, has shine and lustre, is traditionally accepted as one of the finest and purest materials in yarns and is worn during religious occasions and traditional festivals in India. Matka is one form of silk that endears for its exceptional shine and fine weave and accommodates adornments of various kinds.

The love for silk is age-old, and its look and feel in certain color combinations is always mesmerizing. Added to it are the endearing qualities of softness, smooth feel, warmth and comfort in the appropriate climatic conditions. Silk be of any form or variety, these natural properties are common to all. No wonder it is the fabric most preferred by women all over.

Mataka silk is a thick but fine variety of silk, thicker than other types of silk, because the original sticky gum or sericin that comes with the cocoon yarn is left as it is. Woven in this form, the fabric tends to assume irregular texture in places, resembling that of tweed cloth. Yet the silk is smooth and lustrous to give a shine that is awesome.

While matka could be woven in its original yarn form, for fashion fabrics like the saree and salwar kameez, there is an adjustment made to get reasonably soft, smooth and even texture of the silk before it is woven. The Mataka Silks of Bhagalpur, Bihar, India are known for their fine quality.

The basic Mataka weave is made of even texture, by making even the yarn thickness before weaving. The gum that is allowed to remain provides extraordinary shine and lustre on the fabric. Mataka silk because of its texture is able to take thread embroidery very well which makes for good motifs and designs.

The Mataka weave is of good count and generally light to bright colors are preferred. Extremely elegant, rich and lush feel, make the Mataka Silk saree, a fabric that would suit exclusive occasions.

Decorated mildly with distributed woven motifs, when the accent is on the smooth lustrous natural shine and there is a matching zari border in the pastel color it makes the wearer look gorgeous. The appearance is so grand that occasions like weddings, parties, festivals would be apt occasions for wearing it.
