Posted: Dec 12, 2016
A fabric that originated in Dhaka, Bangladesh, the roots of the Tant saree have spread to the Indian side in neighbouring Bengal since long. The Bengal Tant Handloom saree, woven from cotton threads is known for its transparency and lightness, is a breathable fabric and hence popularly preferred for daily use in hot and humid climes.
The Tant Saree is a Handloom Cotton fabric popular among the women of Bengal and Bangla Desh. Murshidabad, Hoogly Nadia and Burdwan situated in Bengal State are famous centres for Tant weaves. Likewise Dhaka and Tangail in Bangla Desh are also known for their Tant Sarees.
Motifs of flowers, the sun, and modern art depictions generally adorn the Tant Saree. Though it has now opened up to a whole lot of new, imaginative experiments in abstract, floral and other captivating combinations. The borders of the fabric are thicker than normal since they are prone to tearing.
The Tant Saree received royal patronage and flourished during the Mughal period. Despite passing through turbulent times during British Rule in India, the traditional Tant Jamdhani Saree has managed to survive and retain its place of pride in Bengal as an appealing and comfortable saree for various occasions.
It is common knowledge that the chief minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee wears a Tant saree, from Dhaniakhali. A 6 metre long white cotton fabric instead of the conventional 5.5 metre saree, it has a wide border between 1.5 and 2.0 inches in colours of green, blue, grey and black. The Saree has a mean count of 100 (No. of threads per square inch of warp and weft).
Additions of hand painting and appliqué work enhance the price of the saree slightly. The chief minister’s slogan Ma, Mati, Manush (Mother, Earth, Man) many a time finds its way on these sarees to make them popular. A weaver weaves about 12 to 14 sarees a year.
Tant Sarees are available as Pure Handloom Cotton Sarees using Meghalaya cotton, Bengal Cotton, Assam Cotton, Nagaland Cotton etc.
