Low back pain is a common discomfort experiencing by a large population of the people. Even small children also suffer from the pain due to various reasons like infection, bone tumors, pyelonephritis, osteomyelitis, and discitis.

It affects all categories of the age and gender. Before taking the treatment for low back pain, it is necessary to know the cause of it.

Common causes of low back pain:

There are many common reasons in our everyday life that cause low backache for example:

  • Sitting for a long time will cause pain in the low back because the muscular tissues get rigid and make the bone and muscle-less mobile and decrease the flexibility and cause pain.
  • Sitting in a wrong posture is the main victim for low lumbago.
  • Even sleeping in the wrong position can cause pain in the lower back. If you are suffering from low back pain symptoms and inflammation and not because of any underlying disorders like cancer, sclerosis, scoliosis, vertebrae damage etc then the treatments are straightforward and can be very effective.
  • Any strain on the lower back muscles.
  • Any injured bone, joints or ligaments causes low back pain.
  • Any extended large nerve roots to arms and legs causes’ pain in the low back.
  • Classification of lower back pain:

Doctors or spine specialists generally categories the backache into three main divisions they are:
  • Simple or mechanical lumbago, this condition causes pain in the lower back area and it will not be radiated to any other parts of the body, they are otherwise called as ‘axial lower backache’.
    • Sciatica’ or ‘radicular lower back pain’ caused by compression of the lower spinal nerve and this condition causes a deep and steady pain in the lower back and pain travels in a specific nerve path into the thighs and legs.
  • Referred pain is caused by any injury and mostly this condition produces an achy dull sensation. The pain will be radiated into the groin, buttocks and upper thigh.
  • Physical therapy for lower backache:

  • Physical therapy is the best medicine for back pain. It is a non-surgical procedure and doesn’t advise medicines or surgical procedures to the patients.
  • The goal of physical therapy is to reduce the low back pain, increase the mobility and to create awareness of prevention of lower back pain among the patients.
  • The physical therapist uses various techniques and procedures to identify the exact reason and cause of lower lumbago. They provide a customized therapy and exercise according to the severity of low backache.
  • Physical therapy course is broadly divided into two i) Active physical therapy and ii) Passive physical therapy.
  • Passive therapy is an initial process of healing low lumbago. Patients are initially exposed to hot or ice cold packs at the affected area for an immediate pain relief. Apart from that passive therapy includes the use of ultrasound, iontophoresis, and electrotherapy to subside the pain in the patients.
  • Active therapy concentrates on stretching and specific exercise that relaxes the affected muscle and strengthens it. The low back area is composed of bony spine and discs surrounded by muscles. Pain occurs once if these muscles get tensed or injured. Exercises for low back pain mainly strengthens the muscles around the disc hence reduce the stress and pain.
  • There are many medical kinds of literature that support Active physical therapy exercises for the treatment of low backache. A low lumbago exercise reduces the pain and severity of the future occurrence.
