Internet and Copyright: Opposing Presence
Posted: Dec 16, 2016
Advent of internet age also meant an easy availability of art, information and more without specific buying or payment. Before internet became an ordinary tool and device available to most of the people, copyright had an important and promising role for the inventors and writers. They had a way to protect their work from illegal usage and further development without their consent was not possible, their payment was dependent on their originality, the credits were judiciously divided. But digital age has changed the trend; anyone who is an admirer of art can download famous artworks, get a print and frame it on their own walls. The concept of payed ownership and more has faded with easy available copies, penetrating into all economic zones. It is not anymore a function of the upper class to collect art and souvenirs; anybody can do it with internet and connectivity optimized.
Copyright is an essential part for the inventors, it provides them justice for the hard work and uniqueness of their work, think of a person who gave his/her best, used intellect and worked extra hours to gain such a position. Now, think of every time we download a free copy of e-book pirated or a famous painting as the wallpaper on our desktops. Although, art crossed the economic boundaries thanks to printing and internet but it also meant degrading the works of a person to something common and easily available. The government of the countries and internet search engines are yet to design a strong law which protects the artist or inventor’s work. Social networking sites india provide mostly information which has no authorship. We can easily download copyright free photos too or song’s mp3 versions.
Content is easily available online, irrespective o the authorship, one can find essays, paragraphs, questions and what not on internet which are worthy of ownership but have none because of lack of copyright rules in the internet world. How many times have we used the help of tutorials online to solve work or home problems, but how many of those times did we realize that for most of the content we had no one to thank in person but the search engine. We need to differentiate between a search engine which provides information and more depending on available websites and does not generate it themselves; most of it is still done by individuals with intellect and reasoning. Copyright needs to be taken more seriously than it has been in the recent past. Internet will otherwise completely erase the concept of ownership in the coming times.
