Know about the Foundation of VIT University

VIT University or VIT, which was called Vellore Engineering College (VEC) earlier, is an institution that imparts higher education and is conferred with a status of a deemed university under Section 3 of the UGC Act.
Established in 1984, as Vellore Engineering College, by G. Viswanathan, the university offers 20 undergraduate, 34 postgraduate, four integrated and four research programs. It has its campuses in Vellore and Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Establishment stone for VIT Bhopal campus at Sehore, Madhya Pradesh was set by Mr. Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh on 20 October 2016.
Vit was established as Vellore Engineering College in July 1984 by Dr. G. Viswanathan, a previous parliamentarian and minister of Tamil Nadu government. The college commenced its academic functioning with three undergraduate courses — Civil, Mechanical, and Electronics and Communication.
Vellore Engineering College was affiliated with Madras University. In 1999, the college was granted the ISO 9002 certificated for three years by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) of the Netherlands, making VEC the first ever institution in India to receive the acknowledgment. In June 2001 the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development gave VEC the status of a 'deemed university' and it was renamed as VIT University.
Admissions in VIT University are carried out on the basis of an entrance test - VITEEE. It’s full form is Vellore Institute of Technology Engineering Entrance Examination and it is held each year in the month of April and May. In 2015, more than two lakh candiates showed up for the entrance test. The exam has been conducted online since 2013. Admissions to postgraduate courses are done through VITMEE test held in the first week of June consistently.
The university offers courses in Engineering, Technology, Applied Sciences and Management. To elaborate, it offers 20 undergraduate programs, 34 postgraduate, four integrated courses, and four doctoral programs. All the courses of various branch of studies are grouped into10 Schools of Study.
VIT is one of the first institution in India to implement the Fully Flexible Credit System (FFCS) that provides students flexibility to make their own time tables by opting for the subjects and the faculties under whose supervision they want to study.
