In the ride sharing community, safety is a controversial topic. While some people believe that rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft are safe for riders, others might argue that they are not. Uber safety is a priority for the company, hence the reason for the thorough background check Uber carries out on any aspiring driver. Also, Uber safety options have been provided in the Uber app to help riders stay safe while in transit. As most riders remain oblivious to these checks, i will discuss some of them below.

After weighing the evidence, it is certain that passengers are indeed safe when using the Uber services. In this post, I have outlined 10 top reasons why Uber is safe:

Before The Ride

  1. Safe pickups

The Uber app automatically finds your location to provide door-to-door service. This ensures your safety and convenience until the driver arrives.

  1. Open to everyone, everywhere

To book uber: All ride requests are blindly matched with the closest available driver. This erases room for discrimination based on race, gender, sexual orientation or destination. A driver/rider is free to report incidences of discrimination based on any of the profiles mentioned above. Riders and drivers found guilty of this offence could have their Uber accounts deactivated.

  1. Driver’s physical and vehicle profiles

When you’re matched with a driver, you’ll see their name, license plate number, photo, phone number and rating. This gives you ample description of the driver and his vehicle ahead of time. After the trip, you’re able to contact your driver if you left something behind. When someone applies to be a driver, Uber collects the applicant’s personal data, including their full name, address, Social Security number, vehicle registration, insurance, and a copy of their driver’s license. Uber proceeds to screen new drivers by using these documents to conduct a background check, looking for criminal records or motor vehicle violations on the intending driver.

During The Trip

  1. Share your ETA

Once you have been picked up by an Uber, you can share your ETA with your friends and family so they can follow your progress and know when to expect you. Many passengers are oblivious to this option given by the Uber app. This enables your loved ones monitor your trip as well.

  1. No need for cash

Fares are automatically charged to the rider’s account. No need to exchange cash with the driver. So drivers and riders in most cities avoid the risk and hassle of carrying cash, making change, and fare disputes. However, Uber has made available the cash option of payment in some cities. Also, with 3rd party applications like Kommen (for scheduling Uber rides), an Uber booking fee is not charged.

After The Trip

  1. Anonymous feedback

After every trip, you can rate the driver and provide anonymous feedback about your ride. Uber reviews all feedback because their goal is to make every ride a great experience. After every ride, Uber passengers are prompted to rate their driver out of five stars and add comments. When Uber receives a complaint about a driver, Uber’s chief security officer, Joe Sullivan had this to say, "The Company takes one of two actions. If the passenger reports violence, the service immediately suspends the driver while it investigates. If the report is for "bad driving, Uber will try to get both sides of the story before suspending a driver’s account". He continued, "We’ll typically wait to try to talk to the driver or try to collect more information, especially if they’re receiving favorable feedback rides in context to that bad rating. The reality is, when drivers drive for hundreds of rides, they will sometimes receive negative feedback, and we don’t want to overreact."

  1. 24/7 support

The Uber support team is always ready to respond to any questions you may have about your trip and help you retrieve lost items. This 24hours service ensures riders and passengers alike have someone to talk to when the need arises.

  1. Rapid response

Uber’s specially-trained incident response teams are available around the clock to handle any urgent concerns that arise.

  1. Substitute Phone number

In many locations around the world, Uber uses technology that anonymizes phone numbers to keep contact details confidential. So when you and your driver need to contact each other, your personal information stays private.

  1. Assisting Law Enforcement
In cases where local law enforcement provides Uber with valid legal process, Uber provides them with useful data to help in their investigations.
