Dental cavity Tooth cavity has been a common complaint by most of us. It is a result of dental caries. Dental caries has been very commonly seen in developing, and under-developed countries as the population are unaware of the consequences of a bad oral hygiene.

How does a Dental Cavity occur?

We eat many kinds of food items and beverages in a day. If we fail to remove the food debris trapped in between the teeth, then harmful micro-organisms start growing on them. They utilize this food waste through a process known as Fermentation; they form acids. These acids are highly harmful to our teeth.

Teeth structure is lost or aptly, the teeth get dissolved in these acids slowly leading to the formation of dental cavities. Dental cavities can occur anywhere on a tooth. Initially, these appear as a small dark spot and are known as incipient caries. If left untreated, these spots or lesions deepen to form a cavity where food particles get trapped, and further accumulation of bacteria takes place. These dental cavities must treat as soon as noticed.

Hence, it advised for everyone to undergo a thorough dental check-up once in every six months. If not treated, the bacterial infection reaches the pulp chamber (the deep structure) of the tooth and resulting in a toothache. A toothache is mostly an alarming indication of an unhealthy tooth, and most of us run to seek the advice of a dentist.

Dental cavities can be treated by any dentist easily. Depending upon the dimensions of a dental cavity, the dentist decides an apt material to fill up the cavity. Dental cavity filling prevents further growth of bacteria. There are many kinds of materials available in the market for filling or restoring a damaged tooth. Some of them are- Amalgam, Composite, Glass Ionomer Cement, Calcium Hydroxide, Zinc-oxide Eugene, IRM, etc. According to these materials, the dental cavity fillings also differ in cost.

Usually, the minimum cost of a dental cavity filling varies for countries. There are also few expensive filler materials. The Amalgam fillings are the cheapest ones ranging whereas the composite fillings are quite expensive. There are many types of composites available in the market.

Composites and the Glass Ionomer cement are aesthetically pleasing whereas the amalgam fillings are not. Hence, a dental cavity occurring in the front teeth region is usually advisable to undergo a composite or Glass ionone filling whereas the dental cavities occurring in the back teeth area mostly filled with amalgam.

Nevertheless, the cost does not matter when we are concerned about our oral health. However, it always said that prevention is better than cure. Hence, we must maintain a proper oral hygiene so that we will not be prone to such dental cavities and its consequences such as a severe toothache.
