Kali The Dark Mother
Posted: Dec 27, 2016
Kali Ma also called the "Dark Mother" is the Hindu Goddess, most commonly associated with death. She is more commonly known for her destroyer aspect, but she is also associated as the Goddess of creation, preservation and destruction. It can be partly true to say that she is the Goddess of death, but she brings the death of the ego as the illusory self-centered view of reality. She has been seen killing the demons. Kali is most often characterized in black or blue with a long lolling tongue, having multiple arms. In one hand she has a sword, a skirt or girdle of human arms, a necklace of decapitated heads, and a decapitated head in one of her hands.
She is most often seen sticking her tongue out and standing on lord Shiva with her one foot on his chest. There is a story behind it. It happened once as the world was threatened by Asuras (demons). The demons rallied together to overthrow the Gods and gain control over earth. The leader of asuras, Raktabija, was granted a power by Brahma. Every time a drop of his blood spilled on the ground his power increased and more asuras took birth from it.
In desperation the Gods turned to the beautiful goddess Durga. Durga rode into battle on a tiger, her champion mount to fight the army of asuras. She killed all the asuras as they stepped forward. It was then between Durga and Raktabija, the demon general. Whenever Raktajiba’s blood spilled his power grew and new demons came forward. They laughed and shouted at the Goddess' dilemma. Upon seeing this, Durga became enraged.
In absolute fury she took the form of Kali, who shook the world with her thundering roar. All of the demon army was consumed by the rage of Kali. When it came between Kali and Raktabija, she pierced him and drank all of his blood so that nothing could be spilled, and threw away his corpse. After that she laughed thunderously and starter her victory dance.
The world was saved but Kali’s victory dance posed a threat to the world’s existence. The Gods approached Lord Shiva to stop Kali. Shiva called out Kali but was unheard by her. In desperation Shiva laid down on the ground. Everything Kali stepped on was demolished, but not the body of Shiva. She realized that it was indeed her husband, Shiva, who lay flattened at her feet. This brought her out of her trance and she once again became calm.
The ability to realize and come to her senses even as she was drunk with the passion for destruction proves the Goddess’s ability for compassion. Artists and sculptors choose to depict this statue of the Goddess, in order to capture the perfect balance of passion and humility, alongside unbridled power and frank sense of accepting having made a mistake.
