5 Things You Must Know About Tooth Bonding
Posted: Dec 28, 2016
What is the procedure all about?
It is a type of the cosmetic dental surgery in which the dentist makes use of tooth colored, resin based material that is used in one or more teeth. It repairs cracks, affected and discolored areas and tooth chips. The procedure of bonding differs based on the type of veneers and crowns used. The procedure is less invasive and the treatment does not make use of any porcelain shell to cover the teeth.
At the time of tooth bonding procedure, the dentist shaves a small part of the tooth and puts on a bonding material to the areas that are affected. The surface of the tooth is heated using a special type of curing light that sticks to the tooth material. Later, the tooth is polished and an appropriate thickness is given to it along with a proper shine.
No Anesthesia Required
In most of the cases, tooth-bonding procedure does not need any anesthesia. Instead, the dentist makes use of a topical numbing agent to numb the affected area, which eases the pain at the time of the procedure. Although the procedure is very mild, patients may get minor pain and unease at the time of shaving the tooth.
Cost of the Procedure
Usually cosmetic dental treatments are expensive but tooth bonding has an advantage over veneers and crowns. The expense of veneers and crowns generally ranges from $900 to $2,500 per tooth while the bonding procedures cost around $300 and $600 per tooth. Moreover, bonding procedures are covered under insurance as well, which minimizes any additional expenses that might occur.
Time of the Procedure
The procedure of tooth bonding can be easily completed in just one clinic visit, which can help in saving time and taking away the need for getting any more appointments. Any other cosmetic dentistry services usually need minimum two appointments for the preparation of the teeth and then the patients are required to visit the dentist after a few weeks after the designing of permanent prosthetics are done.
Drawbacks associated with the procedure
Though there are various advantages of tooth bonding, it is equally important to understand the drawbacks that are linked with the process. One of the most common issues with tooth bonding procedure is that the resin easily catches stain, which is a big worry for coffee and cigarette addicts.
