It sounds like a crazy thing to do, something none of us would do, but in fact, it happens to regular drivers all the time. We’re talking about putting the wrong fuel into your car and then having to deal with the consequences. Although we have mentioned the WRX in the title of this article, the information mentioned here is useful for all makes and models of car.

Putting Petrol in a Diesel Engine:

This is the most common mistake, and sadly it is by far the worst thing to get wrong when refueling a car. The petrol nozzle easily fits into a diesel fuel filler, and there is little to no additional warning that an accident is about to occur. Petrol has a terrible effect on a diesel engine; you may need, a new fuel injector, fuel pump, fuel tank, filters and perhaps even a new engine.

What Can You Do?

The most important thing is to recognise what you have done before you turn the engine on. This is easier said than done, but it will prevent further damage if you can manage it. The car should be put in neutral and pushed to a safe spot away from the pumps. Call for roadside assistance because you will need a fuel drain to remove the petrol. If you begin to drive, you should notice the problem immediately as your engine will make some terrible noises. Stop as soon as it is safe to do so, turn off the engine and call for professional help.

Putting Diesel in a Petrol Engine:

It is really hard to do this as the fuel filler should not accept the fuel nozzle, but somehow it still happens. Luckily, this is not a severe as putting petrol in a diesel engine, but it should still be treated as a serious issue. The fuel must be prevented from circulating as much as possible to avoid damage to fuel injectors in particular.

What Should You Do?

Turn your engine off as quickly and safely as you can. Put the car in neutral and push it to a safer place. As above you will need professional help to drain the fuel completely from the system. The damage will not be as extensive if you act quickly and any repairs could be cheaper to effect.
