Genetic Engineering refers to the direct manipulation of DNA using various technical methods to make changes in the genetic makeup of any living being. The genetic engineering process is intended to build an important and useful characteristic in an organism and may include targeted changes, additions and deletions to the genome. The alterations through genetics can be done either from the same or the different type of organism.

The relevance of genetic engineering is quite apt in present times and will be of great importance in the future. Let us look into the present and future applications of it:

1. Present Applications:

1. Medical Usage:

The genetic engineering has changed the orientation of human medicine. Many bacterias have been used in the studies of genetic engineering because of their easily modified genome.

To address some disease conditions, the gene therapy is used in which the DNA is administered either directly to the human body or altered externally in a lab and then delivered to the human body.

2. Agriculture Usage:

Gene modification is done to the genome of various plants species, and a new variety is formed out of it. The benefits of doing modifications reflect its commercial variableness. Many new varieties of pest resistant seeds have been made like BT Brinjal, BT cotton, BT potato. The modification is also done to increase the nutritional value in the product.

2. Future Applications:

1. Medical Relevance:

Experts are trying to correct some disease even before the birth of a baby by correcting the defects in DNA. The concept of triple parent-baby in under experiment in which the mitochondrial DNA of the impacted mother is replaced by the mitochondrial DNA of a heathy female.

2. Environmental Relevance:

The environmental usage of genetic engineering includes the potential use of engineered bacteria to turn waste material into useful products including fuel, plastics and more. Environmental protection is the priority area of world leaders nowadays.

Some of the best colleges in India that offer a degree in genetic engineering are:

Indian Institute of Technology (Kharagpur and Delhi)

Kakatiya University

Delhi University

University of Calcutta

MKU-Coimbatore

Birla Institute of Technology (Pilani Rajasthan)

University of Lucknow, U.P

Sri ramachandra Medical College & Research

Jadavpur University, West Bengal

Andhra University

Siksha O Anusandha University

University of Kerala

Genetic engineering has a lot of scope in future. Try exploring more about what colleges are offering in genetic engineering in India.
