Intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) and abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) are the prevailing factors leading to organ dysfunction and increased risk of mortality bringing potential complications to the critical ill patients. Various factors including surgical and several medical factors are responsible for increased IAH and ACS. Surgical factors include, postoperative hemorrhage, ileus, omphalocele and gastroschisis (primary closure of abdominal wall defects), primary trauma or burns etc. Whereas medical associated risk factors leading to IAH and ASC cover edema, acute pancreatitis, acute respiratory failure with elevated intra-thoracic pressure, intra-abdominal tumor etc. Intra- abdominal pressure measurement devices measure the pressure inside the patient’s bladder with the use of indwelling urinary catheter. Diagnosis of IAH and ACS relies on measurement of intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) which can be defined as the steady state pressure within the abdominal cavity of the patient’s body which is measured in millimeter of mercury (mmHG) units. The IAP is approximately 5-7 mmHg in critically ill adults. ACS is a sustained intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) greater than 20 mmHg which is often leads to new organ failure. At the time of laparoscopic surgery, the IAP can be obtained directly by an intra-peritoneal catheter which is inserted during peritoneal dialysis (PD). Indirect measurement of IAP is achieved by measurement of intra-vesicle pressure, uterine, gastric, airway, rectal, and inferior vena cava pressure. IAP measurement in patients with bladder trauma, neurogenic bladders, outflow obstruction and tense pelvic hematomas is done using nasogastric IAP monitor, which involves inserting a nasogastric tube through the stomach for continuous measurement of IAP. Adoption of intra-abdominal pressure measurement devices in critically ill patients is expected to witness a positive growth over the forecast period owing to increasing number of trauma, burn, gastropareisis, ileus, pseudo obstruction cases.

Intra-Abdominal Pressure Measurement Devices Market: Drivers & Restraints

ASC is characterized by organ dysfunction as a result of IAH prevailing in 81% of ICU patients. The condition is thought to occur in varied surgical and traumatic conditions. It is estimated that approximately 45% of IAH are multifactorial while hemorrhage, fluid overload coupled with intra-abdominal sepsis are the leading cause of ASC. All these factors are expected to drive the market for intra-abdominal pressure measurement devices market in the near future. Also, technical advances in the treatment protocol and superiority in surgical technique along with correction of coagulopathy is expected to lower postoperative hematoma and bleeding. Also, prophylactic abdominal decompression procedure is gaining popularity among surgeons in order to treat traumatic conditions, thus increasing the market for intra-abdominal pressure measurement devices. However, the procedure is still lacking its utilization among general surgeons. Expected launch of several intra-abdominal pressure measurement devices is expected to result in higher market revenues in the near future. For instance, in December 2016 Centurion Medical Products, launched compass digital pressure transducers for monitoring and measuring of IAP and ASC. In comparison to the traditional devices including water-column manometers and pressure transduction devices, compass digital pressure devices saves diagnostic time.

However, false negative results from chronic or radiation cystitis or pelvic hematoma or due to leakage of the system is expected to hamper the intra-abdominal measurement devices market growth over the forecast period.

Intra-Abdominal Pressure Measurement Devices Market: Segmentation

Intra-abdominal pressure measurement devices market is classified on the basis of product type, application, end user and geography.

Based on product type, the intra-abdominal pressure measurement devices market is segmented into the following:

  • Intra-abdominal pressure Monitor

  • Accessories

Based on application, the intra-abdominal pressure measurement devices market is segmented into the following:

  • Intra-abdominal Hypertension (IAH)

Intra-Abdominal Pressure Measurement Devices Market: Overview

Intra-abdominal pressure measurement devices market is expected to grow at a faster pace over the forecast period owing to growing number of IAH and ASC cases globally. IAP measurement devices allow healthcare providers to timely trend the pressure inside the patient’s body and thus preventing end stage organ dysfunction and failure in case of ACS. Also, rapidly growing population with various diseases indications that lead to IAP and ASC at some point of their lifetime is also expected to drive the revenues for intra-abdominal pressure development of devices measurement devices over the forecast period. Increasing efforts by several device manufacturers have also lead to development of IAP devices with improved features and functions.
