A hard steel pin that connects the piston of an engine with the connecting rod is known as the Piston pin or you can call it wrist pin. To reduce the weight, the pin is made hollow and is held in place with different methods. These high-performance pistons typically help in the place using wire clips and aluminium buttons. Distinctive factories stock diverse piston pin designs by relying on the pressed fit.

Regular oiling is must in the case of this unique part and it is seriously recommended while installation of a new piston pin as it helps in passing through the piston. It is suggested not to miss the lubrication of pin as it may result in seizing of piston each time. The generation of high heat through the connecting rod which rotates in the piston may cause the dry pin to fall into the piston. It may also result into broken connecting rods and broken engine block.

When you talk about these pins which are made of hard steel, they are mostly preferred by the users. But for high-performance applications tool steel pins are used. As they are strongest and most durable product which can withstand ultra-high horsepower. The usage of high-grade materials not only makes the product light weight but also boost its application in the engine. It accelerates it at a much faster rate as compared to the engine having heavier pins.

Types of Piston Pins-

When you talk about piston rings and pins they are usually hollow and crafted using alloy steel, machined, hardened, and precision ground in order to fit the bearings. Due to its unique construction, it has maximum strength and minimal weight. In order to increase the wearing quality, these pins are chromium-plated. And they are consistently lubricated through the splash from the crankcase by the oil which is passed through the drilled passages inside the connecting rods or also through the piston oil spray nozzles.

These pins must be secured at one position in order to prevent it from popping out beyond the surface or have excessive end-to-end motion. Or the pin will damage the cylinder wall. It should be kept secured inside the connecting rod in three ways:

  • Bolted tightly into the piston.

  • Clamped to the end of the rod.

  • They are free to rotate in both piston and rod as well.

These are three methods in which these pins are fixed and are identified by the following three names:-

Stationary- These pins are secured to the piston at the bosses and connecting rod which oscillates on the pin.

Semi-floating- These pins are secured in the mix of the connecting rod. While the end of the pins is free to move in the piston pin bearings.

Full-floating- This type of pin is held in caps, plugs, and snap ring and at the time in spring clips which is fixed to the bosses. These pins are not at secured in the piston or the connecting rod.

Overall, you can say that maintenance of any parts of machines is necessary which is not only helps in smooth functioning but also prevents from corrosion and damage. Look for high-quality one for better functionality.

Summary- Whether you are running a manufacturing industry or working in it, you need to be aware of the fact that for consistent functioning proper maintenance of piston pin and piston rings required. So go for it regularly.
