Should You Volunteer to Help Animals or Adopt One?

Animals are incredibly interesting creatures. If you are evaluating the potential of applying to participate in animal volunteer programs versus adopting a pet, you’re not alone. Many people face this decision, and it’s an important one. Here are a few factors you can consider to help you decide if you’re a better candidate to bring an animal into your home or help with a community program.

How Many Times Have You Moved in Recent Times?

Each time you move, a pet may need time to adjust. If you’re thinking about rescuing a dog, try to commit to giving the recuperating animal a long stayin one place. Usually people who move every one or two years aren’t good candidates for bringing in a foster pet. That being said, such persons can be excellent candidates for participating in animal volunteer programs. Therefore, even if you move during a period of involvement, it shouldn’t interrupt the good you’re trying to do.

Do You Have Live-in Help?

Everybody with a pet at home should have a backup person who is able to help, if possible. This is especially true for those who own mammals. If you work full-time outside of the home, you could be gone for 10 or more hours out of the day. That is a long time for any dog to have to wait to relive itself. Hiring a dog walker could be a solution, but not everyone is able to keep up with the cost.Another issue with canines is that they sometimes feel separation anxiety when no one’s around. Some bark throughout the day, annoying nearby neighbors. All of these potential problems should be taken into consideration when deciding between animal volunteer programs and bringing home your own pet. If you have a spouse, roommate or relative who shares your space with you, you may be able to adopt a dog and still support a community program.

Are You a Homebodyor a Socialite?

This is another point that should factor into your decision. Homebodies make great pet owners, as they prefer to be by their pooch’s side than anywhere else. For that matter, outdoor exercise buffs may also be excellent animal caregivers, as they can take their dog for a walk or run as often as every day. Socialites may spend a good portion of their nights and weekends outside of their homes, so they are usually a better fits for participating in community programs. Entertainers could make excellent pet owners though, as people who regularly invite others to their homes may be able to allow their dog or cat to roam freely among visiting guests. Stay-at-home parents are great candidates for animal adoption, as they tend to be either home with the kids or out playing as a family. It isn’t hard for a pet to tag along for such activities.

After weighing the above factors, where do you fit in? For many who are childless, joining a nonprofit organization is a great match. Those who work from home or already have a family may be better suited to bring a furry friend into the household. For more information just visit on foundanimals.org
