Whether it’s time to pick out fixtures for a brand new home or upgrade an old bathroom, the choice of tub matters. Today’s homeowners will find that many people are making the conscious decision to put safety first by selecting walk-in tubs for their bathrooms rather than traditional models. As the benefits of walk-in tubs become more widely known, this option is becoming popular even when concerns related to mobility aren’t present.

The similarities between traditional bathtubs and walk-ins are undeniable. Both are designed to enable people to soak, relax and address personal hygiene needs. Depending on the model of walk-in tub in question, however, that is where the similarities end. These designs, initially developed to help elderly people and those with disabilities enjoy easier and safer access to bathing, come in a diversity of shapes and styles. When a substitute for a traditional-sized tub is being considered, these features make walk-ins stand out:

  • Safety with accessibility – The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention points to the bathroom as being one of the most dangerous rooms in a home. Each year, thousands of emergency room visits occur for people off all ages due to trips, slips and falls in the bathroom. Walk-in tubs eliminate one of the biggest bathroom safety concerns by removing the need to step up and over the side of a tub to get in. With doors that swing in or out, depending on the model, these tubs are just easier to access.
  • Other safety features – Walk-in tubs are designed with safety in mind. In addition to their doors, these designs tend to have safety bars, ADA-compliant seating and even slip/skid resistant floor surfaces. All of that adds up to a safer experience for anyone of any age as they get into and out of the tub.
  • Luxury comfort features – Perhaps one of the driving reasons behind the rise in popularity of walk-in tubs is the long list of extra, luxury features that may come along with these designs. Depending on the model and upgrades selected, homeowners can have tubs that boast warm air massaging jets, shower surround, heated seating, aromatherapy, heated water jets and more. All of that adds up to an experience that goes above and beyond a normal tub for relaxing at the end of a long day.

Choosing a tub for a new home or a bathroom upgrade presents with many potential options. While a traditional bathtub can serve the purpose, walk-in tubs are meant to do more. As the benefits of walk-in tubs become more widely known and accepted, these designs simply are no longer just for the elderly and infirmed. People of all ages and mobility levels can enjoy the safety benefits and comfort features that these tubs provide.
