How to Easily Replace a Petrol Water Pump In 5 Steps

Your engine driven pump’s performance will depend on many factors, none more than the petrol engine and of course the water pump itself. Hence, when something irreparable goes wrong, you will need to take time to replace it with a similar product or a petrol water pump that is compatible with your engine. You may need to replace the water pump if it is making the engine overheat. It is recommended to replace it as soon as it becomes problematic, or it could damage the engine for good and lead to more costly replacements. Replacing a water pump should be easy as long as you follow the manufacturer’s recommendation and guidelines. In case it does not come with instructions, here are five steps to easily replacing a petrol water pump:

1. Select the right parts and product – Look up brand new petrol water pumps offered by a leading provider of power equipment products. Consider a retailer that carries the best petrol water pump brands like Honda and Subaru. Make sure the retailer has an excellent track record of providing authentic and high-quality products to its customers. You may want to consider buying engine oil, an anaerobic gasket maker, and a gasket, too.
2. Take the A/C compressor from the bracket – You should find the A/C compressor at the back, on top of the engine and directly above the petrol water pump. It is typically held by four bolts onto the bracket. Depending on the brand of the water pump, some of the nuts may be difficult to access. To save time and effort, loosen at least three nuts and bolts, then slide the compressor off its bracket. A bolt, washer, or nut may fall into the engine bay, but you do not have to waste time looking for them anymore.
3. Remove the belts – Pull out the wide single belt surrounding the A/C compressor, crank pulley, and idler pulley, and remove the twin drive belts around the water pump pulley, alternator, and the crank pulley’s outer ring. Then, proceed to remove the water pump pulley, which is typically held by four 10mm bolts.
4. Remove the gasket on the block – The petrol water pump faces a firewall and situated under the A/C compressor bracket, so it may be difficult to discern the gasket mating surface on block. Consider holding a mirror against the firewall while making sure that there is enough light above it, so you can easily find the gasket. Use a straight razor to scrape it off.
5. Replace the pump – The petrol water pump should easily slide in. Once it is in place, tighten the bolts and start replacing the belts. Be sure to try the new pump so you can diagnose any existing problems.
