The Subaru BRZ is an exciting sports coupe and unique in the Subaru stable as rear wheel drive vehicle. As a proud owner of this car, many people are quite picky about what kind of fuel they use. One can see online forums where this subject is discussed at length, and every petrolhead seems to have a different opinion. One question that gets asked a lot is the suitability of E10 fuel and its impact on performance. Let’s take a closer look at E10 fuel and whether it is a good option for using in the BRZ.

E10 Fuel Basics:

It only seems like yesterday that ethanol blended biofuel or E10 was introduced in Australia. In fact, E10 has now been in continuous use for over two decades, and it has become a popular fuel choice on Australian service station forecourts. For those unfamiliar with the E10, it was introduced in the 90’s as an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional petrol. It is partially created from sugar cane molasses and/or red sorghum that is turned into ethanol. This means that E10 is created from a renewable resource and it reduces the reliance on fossil fuels. Another plus in the environment box is that E10 produces less carbon monoxide emissions as it burns cleaner than petrol. For the average consumer, E10 is an attractive option as it is typically slightly cheaper at the pump. However, this fuel has a lower heat of combustion than petrol which means that it is less efficient and has a slightly higher fuel consumption per kilometer.

The Subaru BRZ:

All recent cars designed for the American market and by extension for us in Australia, have been designed to run on E10 for many years. In fact, the BRZ owner's manual recommends that cleaner burning gasoline is used and that can include reformulated gasoline. There are different kinds of reformulated gasolines, they all contain some kind of oxygenate, and one of these is ethanol. As such, Subaru is recommending that E10 and fuels similar to it are actually ideal for using in the BRZ. There will be no loss of performance experienced using E10 fuel when compared to using a conventional petrol.
