However, the eco-friendly companies wash the rush-straw thoroughly, as the first stage, and then they apply an infrared procedure that heats the mats,killing any lingering molds or insects. Some companies are so serious about the quality of their Tatami mats that they strive to gain a rating that’s referred to as the "Best Grade #1", which means that the ‘weaving’ pattern of the straw reveals little or no variation and is virtually or consistently symmetrical. Select Tatami mats qualify for a Japanese rating system referred to as the JAL Approval Certificate for using non-toxic materials in their construction.
