The Spiritual Significance of Diwali

Diwali is a celebration of victory over evil and the coming of the New Year. It is a festival of Lights. Diwali means rows of lights. Lamps are lit in our homes to drive away the darkness of the New Moon. Diwali is 4 days festival which falls every year on New Moon (Amavasya) in the Hindu month of Karthik. Vedas say that all the light in the world cannot be compared to the effulgence of inner light or soul. Diwali is a festival that illuminates both our outer and inner worlds. Lighting of lamps

Lighting lamps symbolize lighting lamp of wisdom, burning of darkness, sorrow, despair, worry, misery, lack of enthusiasm and hope. To dispel sorrow; light of happiness has to be lit, to dispel disease; light of health has to be lit. To overcome losses and failures; light of prosperity has to be lit.

One has to light a lamp to dispel one`s own darkness and ignorance and carry the inner lamp wherever one goes for the path ahead will be lit. One should light lamps and pray for knowledge, wisdom and purity of mind, body, speech and thoughts.

Dhanteras

It marks the first day of Diwali and is called Dhan Trayodashi. On this day wealth is worshiped. Scriptures say that wealth should be earned slowly and steadily by hard work and truthfulness. Adversity occurs if wealth is ill- gotten, at least 1/6 of earnings should be offered to God say the holy texts.

It is said that Lakshmi`s principle or chaitanya is spread all over the universe on this day. She provides opulence, wealth and prosperity. Hence, on this day she is worshiped with reverence and utmost devotion. Business persons worship their treasuries on this day for a steady flow of wealth.

It is also the birthday of Lord Dhanvantri, God of Ayurveda and Physician of Gods. This day is very significant for Ayurvedic doctors who distribute neem leaves as Prasad. Neem originated from nectar and chewing few leaves everyday keeps us free of diseases. Many families worship Dhanvantri to be free of illnesses.

Naraka Chaturdasi - Defeat Of Narakasura by Krishna

Demon Narakasura was killed by Krishna. Festival of Diwali is celebrated because of this victory of Lord Krishna. Narakasura is a personification of all evil tendencies in a man. Naraka means hell. All these negative and evil tendencies obstruct the upward impulses in a man and lead him to sorrow and hell of misery. Through divine help, one can overpower such tendencies.
