Education has become much more than sitting in a class and staring at the blackboard and listening to the teacher drone on! Today education is all about experiencing the subject and the school teachers are well aware that they need to fascinate the child rather than subject them to a one way throw of information. Also, new technology available today is changing the way students interact with the use of smartphones and the widespread use of internet enabled computer and tablets. Information and learning is shared in an instant making the school teachers job much more challenging yet opening doors to new and exciting forms of education.

Here are some interesting new technologies that are finding widespread usage in schools:

1. Google Docs

Google Docs is a great tool that works on similar lines to Microsoft Office. Docs and Sheets are built into every Google email address. These allow students and teachers to share and collaborate on documents with others. Sharing is easy and the application allows the original ‘owner’ of the document to choose who can view and/or edit the document. In a class this can be very powerful tool when the students are working together on a project and they can each complete their part of the project on one document or sheet. When updated by any one user the document automatically updates for all the users. The Docs and Sheets also has a comment option where the teacher

may not edit the writing but can push the student to better the writing by commenting on how it can be improved or provide positive feedback. The comments can be left in written form or as a voice message. The application also allows the users to view the previous changes made and restore to an earlier version. With endless possibilities and easy sharing options Google Docs is a great way to collaborate and learn.

2. Skype and Video Conferencing

New technology allows for voice and video communication over the internet and this new application has far reaching benefits. Students or the entire class can have an interactive session with a professor sitting on the other side of the globe with the ease of attending a lecture in the same classroom. This provides a boost for the school teacher as well as he/she can learn and interact face-to-face with the students who are unable to attend school and impart education with ease.

3. 3D Printing

A 3D printer may still seem like something from science fiction, but they are here and are being accepted in various uses. A 3D printer ‘prints’ objects but does not use ink. Instead it uses a more substantial material which can mould to create a 3 dimensional object. While the object may not be intricate, strong or functional, the ability to create such an object has many educational advantages. Here are some of the uses of a 3D printer in education:

  • Lower and middle school students can use it to test and develop solutions to a given problem.
  • They can be used to print out prototypes
  • History can come alive as 3D printers can be used to recreate historical artefacts.
  • Design students can create three dimensional versions of their work.
  • Engineering students can create improved or modified versions of existing parts.

Technology is rapidly changing in today’s world and the basic concepts like communication are being redefined rapidly. It is important that these technological advancements also enter the schools to better the interaction students have with the outside world as well as to help students re-imagine concepts and learning with a new world background.
