Twenty-four hours power supply is rarity in India and power cut is common in both big cities as well as in towns. With electricity becoming an indispensible part of life, managing without electricity even for few hours is quite traumatic and cumbersome. Thus, installing power backup is inevitable, as managing life without electricity is simply impossible today. Though, today there are many backup solutions available but the most common solution of power-cut is inverter-battery system. Inverter or UPS has become a common power back-up device used across homes and offices in India with extensive range of inverter and batteries available in the market. In case of power cuts, the alternative source of power delivered by batteries help to fulfill the electricity needs of the people.

A battery is a vital part of the inverter that store electricity in the form of DC power and with the help of inverter convert this DC power into AC power to restore the electric supply in case of power failure. Lead acid type and tubular batteries can be connected to inverters, both of which are rechargeable wet batteries that need proper maintenance for uninterrupted performance. If the batteries are not properly maintained then these are bound to create problems and hence one should be aware of care and maintenance that are essential for its durability and consistent performance. Proper care and maintenance of batteries not just ensure its performance but even the performance of inverter greatly depends upon the battery.

Batteries are believed to be cumbersome and high maintenance because people believe that wet batteries need frequent water topping. But in reality this is not the case, a 150AH, 12V tubular battery requires water topping once every two months and that too if it is used frequently. Another common myth about the inverter battery is the type of water used to fill the battery. People usually think that normal tap water is used in the batteries but actually wet batteries need distilled water, in which ions and naturally dissolved salts available in tap water are removed. Using the normal tap water in batteries will drastically reduce its life. Even the extreme outside temperature of the battery affects its performance and consumes more power to charge it. Another important thing that should be kept in mind for proper care and maintenance of battery is that it should never be completely discharged because charging a completely discharged battery is quite difficult and it consumes much more electricity to get pulled up and eventually the battery might also lose its ability to hold charge. This not only reduces battery life but also waste electricity to get charged. One common problem associated with most of the inverter battery is the premature breakdown of the battery that is usually caused due to sulphation of battery plates. Sulphate crystal is formed inside the battery plates over the period of time that hampers the chemical process inside the battery. Thus, battery should be properly cleaned from time to time to avoid the crystal formation that cause premature breakdown.
