One of the most popular types of holiday offered in the current market is river cruises. In Europe in particular, this market is booming, with specialist companies offering excellent itineraries and opportunities to enjoy this unique kind of experience.

Once you have decided on this as your next holiday, there are some important tips and tricks to bear in mind. River cruises in Europe are very different from regular beach breaks, sea liner cruises, walking holidays, or any of the other types of break they may appear to brush shoulders with. It is certainly the case that the whole experience is more than the sum of its parts - therefore preparation is important in order to gain the most out of what will undoubtedly be a wonderful and memorable time.

Preparation and expectation

When embarking on a barge cruise, it is important to remember you will spend a large portion of the time walking around, visiting cities, towns and monuments. River cruises in Europe are very different from sea going ones, and you must not expect to spend all day sunbathing. As such, large suitcases overflowing with myriad fashion options are unadvisable; rather, you should pack light and include comfortable clothes and shoes. Also, make sure you bear in mind your physical condition and be careful not to underestimate your limitations, as this could lead to problems arising later on.

Similarly, guests preparing to embark on river cruises in Europe should remember that they will be exploring not only large cities, but also less touristy parts of the country, inhabited primarily by locals. Knowing a few measures of common courtesy and some basic sentences in the native language(s) of the region(s) being visited is a huge help, and may on occasion change the locals’ view of you. Sampling the local delicacies is, obviously, also advised, but you already knew that...

Another important tip to remember is that many countries differ from others in currency and electric sockets – and most importantly, most of them differ from Britain. Remember, then, to equip yourself with appropriate currency and at least one electric adaptor prior to departure.

Other than these few basic measures, the most important thing to aim for when embarking on an adventure on a barge is to have fun. Do not feel pressured into seeing or experiencing everything; take your time and make special moments that you will cherish forever. Getting up early to experience dawn over the river, for example, can be worth many a fond memory, while staying in a city as long as possible will allow you to be thorough in your exploration. Most barge holidays will have a somewhat strict schedule to adhere to, but, whenever possible, make as much time as you can for any given destination. And remember to take lots of photos.

These preparations may not, on the surface, seem all that different from those you would take for any other type of holiday, but you are embarking on a truly unique experience so managing both your preparations and expectations is vital.
