Things You Need to Know About Using Plug Adaptors
Posted: May 15, 2017
Are you planning to travel abroad with your devices? To avoid inconvenience, you need to sort out how to charge or power them before you leave. Different countries may have different power outlet standards, so you may have to bring plug adapters along for the ride. Here are a few things you need to consider.
Different countries may have electrical outlets. The same goes for the voltage supplied from the local grid. You have to bring the proper adapter kit with you to match your destination country’s standards. There is a distinction between a plain plug adapter and a voltage converter. In each case, you will need one or the other, or both. Learn the difference between the two.
To start off, find out what the voltage and amperage requirements of your device or appliance is. This is to make sure you do not overload or overheat your equipment (and possibly damage or break them). In the US, standard outlets are run with 110 volts. So if you are going to another country or territory, be sure to carry with you a voltage converter. Thankfully most newer devices and gadgets like laptops and smart phones are designed with auto voltage power supplies or chargers. For older appliances however, that is not the case. That is why it is important to check the labels for voltage requirements to ensure that you have the right converter for the job.
Another consideration is the plug and socket type. Again, this will vary depending on the country. It is best to check out what type your destination territory uses. There are a number of options, and some socket adapters can even accommodate multiple plug types in one.
Be sure to find an adapter with a snug fit. Do not skimp out on quality. Ill fitting adapters can cause shorts which may damage your devices or even cause injuries and fires. Also look at the build quality. Poorly made adapters break easily, do not fit snugly, or may be over tight and not fit at all. Find an adapter made out of good plastic material. Cheaply made ones may break down with heat and fail.
