The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the largest board in India with 18,000 affiliated to it, has plans to set up book lockers as mandatory, when it makes its new affiliation bylaws. By installing lockers in schools, the students can deposit the books and make their lives a little easier. The backpack culture has telling effects on the health of the children as many of them were reported to have developed back aches, as they carry bag packs with heavy books in it.

As the number of complaints by students and parents are growing, the board took a call to introduce lockers in schools affiliated to it. Lot of advisories were issued to CBSE schools across the country to alleviate the sufferings of the students, no concrete solution came up from these institutions. So, the CBSE has decided to introduce lockers. If lockers are in place, students don't have to ferry it back and forth every day. They can deposit books that are not required at home at these lockers. The investment made by these schools across the country is for long term and that is why the board has decided to link it to affiliation, according to a senior official of CBSE.

Towards that end, the CBSE has formed a Committee to review its affiliation rules to stem the rot of commercialization of school education that is plaguing the country. What with the Board's curriculum following a two semester system, the Union Government has envisaged introducing NCERT books in two volumes, aiming at reducing the burden of students. Although, this plan is in a nascent stage, more thoughts need to go into it before firming up things. According to the official, before taking a final decision pertaining to books, all stakeholders will be consulted.

In order to minimize the back load, the CBSE had advised students to pack their bags in an organized way and also urged the parents to raise their concerns over heavy loads during the parent-teacher meetings in the past. With the introduction of these new measures, it is hoped that the children, the torch bearers of young India will be relieved off the pressure of lugging heavy books.
