How Server Colocation Hosting Can Benefit Businesses

Server colocation hosting is a process where a business places its self-owned servers and other IT infrastructure in a data center owned by a third-party usually a web hosting provider. It is different from the regular web hosting where a customer takes both space and the server from the host. In colocation, the customer has their server and buys only space from the host instead of utilizing their in-house space.

Huge savings on bandwidth:

One of the significant benefits for an organization with server colocation hosting is the high bandwidth they can access at no additional cost. The connectivity costs can run high and the capacity may not be possible in an in-house in comparison to what you get in a data center. Colocation also minimizes the latency and downtime as they have better solutions against outages with 24/7 technical support team available at the data center.

Control is with the client:

In server colocation hosting although the client places the server off their business premises, they still have access to it. Suppose the website is performing slower than usual, they can add more capacity without the need to call and waiting for the host to do it. They can install the software and deploy the hardware they want their business.

However, it will require their technical team to be within reach of the data center to attend to any issues and the client must buy the server components at their cost as they would have done with an in-house server.

Business Continuity while you move:

Server colocation hosting is more beneficial when a business is moving. The website continues to run without any hindrance while the clients shift their location. An in-house machine would have required either to be shut down for a while or maintain two domains (one at the current premises and other at the new premises) until such time that they move adding up to the costs and efforts.

However, commuting to the data center and getting instant access to the server will not be possible if the new premises is not in the same geographical location. The client should find a new provider or buy the managed services paying more continuing with the current provider.

No upfront investment required:

Computers require continuous power and must rely on backup systems to be available even at times of power outages. The servers need a cool environment so that the risk of blowing up due to being continuously on is eliminated. These power backups and cooling systems require huge investments which a business need not worry about with server colocation hosting. The hosts cater to the management and maintenance of the infrastructure at their costs.

Data center facilities:

The servers are all housed in highly redundant data centers. The data center in India offers space in the form of racks and cabinets. It offers N+1 redundancy with power backups, cooling units, safety devices such as water leakage equipment and fire extinguishers. The hosts also employ individual technicians to maintain this equipment throughout the day. They also offer a stringent security system with guards, mantraps, restricted access and CCTV monitoring.
