Temporary Materials give short term solution to Permanent Problem

Dentistry is one of the branches of medicines deals with dental problems. Any issues to the tooth are solved by various methods. Temporary material is used to prepare the temporary tooth until the permanent impression is made. It last for one month with frequent visit of the doctor. The temporary materials used are filling material and temporary cement

Filling material: In temporary filling method the tooth does not last for long period hardly one month. One has to meet doctor immediately for permanent solution. Generally the temporary filling materials are zinc oxide powder, Eugenol, zinc phosphate, composite chemical and other materials.

Temporary cement: Luting agents are used in cementing that is including in permanent and temporary cements. This acts acts as an adhesive to hold together jaw to the tooth structure. Most commonly, temporary cement is selected for the placement of provisional coverage.

Types of cements in dentistry

  • Zinc-oxide Eugenol- It is a material formed by combining of zinc oxide and Eugenol contained in oil of cloves. An acid-base reaction takes place with the formation. Catalysis is process acceralating the chemical reaction and cooled by water. Zinc-oxide Eugenol is used as a filling tooth, deep decay. If it is not cured with zinc oxide decay continuous and leads to inflammation. If it continuous further leads to root canal treatment
  • Zinc phosphate - It acts as corrosion resistant and prevents from rust. It is one the most commonly used corrosion inhibitor because of its special properties, Zinc phosphate coats superior on a tooth material and seedling agent is used before treatment. One common agent is sodium phosphate
  • Polycarboxylate – They are used for particle dispersion, fine structure is possible with polycarboxylate. They add 4-15% of total cement weight and this mixture gives perfect shape to the tooth and appears like permanent tooth with short time.
  • Glass ionomer – It is used to prevent dental cries and it forms great seal of bond the tooth and surrounding environment. Glass ionomer is formed by poly silicate glass powder and polyalkenoic acid.
  • Composite resin - This is mainly used in reshaping of shapeless decayed tooth. In this filling is tooth coloured plastic and glass mixture is used to get back to normal position of decayed tooth.

Purpose of filling materials:

  • In emergency of dental treatment
  • If permanent procedure requires multiple sessions
  • To appear at the point of time
  • Perfect appearance
  • To give proper shape to the face
  • To repair or replace the decay tooth
  • Temporary solution to the severe tooth problem
