Dupioni(also referred to a as Douppioni) is a plain weave crisp type of silk fabric, produced by using fine thread in the warp and uneven thread reeled from two or more entagled cocoons in the weft. This creates tightly-woven yardage with a highly-lustrous surface. It is similar to shantung, but slightly thicker, heavier and with a greater slub (cross-wise irregularity) count. Dupioni is often woven with differing colors of threads scattered through the warp and weft.

This technique gives the fabric an iridescent effect, similar to but no to pronounced as shot silk taffeta. Dupioni can be woven into plaid and striped patterns, floral or other intrinsic, intricate designs are better suited for lighter-weight silks and/or those with smoother finishes, although dupioni may be embroidered in any manner desired.

Along with shantung, dupioni is popular in bridal and other formal wear. It is suitable for upholstery, but if it is crafted into a curtain or drape, a substantial underlining must be used to protect the fabric from sunlight. Sometimes known as dupion or Douppioni, silk dupioni is created with the threads from two different silk worms. When two worms spin their cocoons close together, the fibers get tangled up these naturally tangled fibers are then used together to make the silk thread. The thread is rougher than regular silk and contains dumps and irregularities where the fibers from the two cocoons are combined. Silk dupioni takes dye well and is usually easy to sew.

Silk dupioni has an advantage over some other types of silks, in that it tends to resist wrinkles, which helps to enhance the usability of the finished fabric. In addition, silk dupioni also has a tendency to take creases very well, which can give the final product a crisp and formal appearance. As an added bonus, the fabric is totally reversible, so it is perfectly acceptable for both sides of the material to be visible.

Dupion silk is the silk obtained from double cocoons. The fabric made out of this silkyarn is the dupion fabric. The yarn and the fabric have more neps or slugs on it which is a natural feature. Some times defective cocoons are also mixed with the double cocoons to obtain dupion silk yarn. The dupion yarn is coarser than the reeled yarn. In most parts of Karnataka, India the double cocoons are usually reeled on Charakha. These days they are also reeled on dupion reeling machine.

At the same time, silk dupioni does have a couple of drawbacks. The material has almost no stretching ability, which means that using this fabric requires the need to be very exact in the measurements before cutting out any pattern. It is also naturally irregular in texture, and the edges may unravel.

The salwar kameez is the attire by every Indian woman. Dupion silk fabric is woven from two silk worms. Due to double thread weaving the cloth is medium weight and has shinning effect. Dupion silk salwar kameez is quite famous and have low priced when compared to pure silk salwar kameez. Indian dupioni silk saris well decorated with pearls, beads, kundans and sequins are impressed on wedding ceremionies.
