Phototherapy is a process which uses light to treat medical conditions. Sunlight has been known to be most useful for certain skin diseases, and the UV part of the radiation emitted by the sun that is used in phototherapy, especially the ultraviolet B (UVB) and ultraviolet A (UVA) wavelengths. Phototherapy consists of exposure of specific wavelengths of light using polychromatic polarized light, fluorescent lamps, lasers, Light emitted diodes, Short wave UV lamp and full spectrum lamps. The light is administered for a prescribed amount of time and specific wavelength. There are three main types of phototherapy broadband UVB (290 nm-320nm), narrow band phototherapy (311nm-312nm) and PUVA (Psorlaen and UVA) and UV A1 (340nm-400nm). UV B is the most common type of phototherapy for treatment of skin related diseases. Such as atopic eczema, psoriasis, generalized itching, dermatitis, lichenoides, T cell lymphomas, vitiligo PUVA (Psorlaen and UVA) is indicated for chronic plaque psoriasis and atopic eczema whenever UVB is not able to treat effectively. According to the American Cancer Society, UV light therapy is effective in treatment of certain types of cancer. Phototherapy is used to treat the neonatal jaundice by converts toxic bilirubin form into less toxic less toxic isomeric bilirubin and that the new born can excrete through stools and urine. This treatment called bili light therapy.
