Modern LED displays: AMOLED and Super AMOLED are popularly used in smartphones

Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) came up a wonderful option that replaced traditional screen in our mobiles, televisions and various other devices. LCD displays continued to dominate the television and mobile screen for a long time but the new generation of LED screens (AMOLED and Super AMOLED) has proved to a better in several aspects and thus is being increasingly used in numerous smartphones. Similarly, LED TVs have almost completely replaced the LCD TVs in most of the countries. There are numerous reasons that manufacturers are looking forward to LED screens instead or LCD screen or traditional screens.

The latest generation of smartphones comes with two types of LED screen: AMOLED and Super AMOLED displays. AMOLED stands for Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode while Super AMOLED are just the advanced version of the simple AMOLED displays. The previous generation of LED screens needed a backlight to provide them the necessary illumination and brightness. Thus, their applications were limited and were not suitable for mobiles. AMOLED come with active LEDs, in which each pixel is capable of creating its own light. They are often referred as truer displays as compared to the LCD displays because they produce true back output unlike LCD screens that produce dark-grey. However, AMOLED displays fail to match the LCD displays in terms of resolution. The display quality of LCD screens is better than the AMOLED screens.

AMOLED screens are still popular because they consume very little power and are extremely thin. They also offer wider viewing angles which mean that one can comfortably observe everything on the screen even from the sides. AMOLED displays are so popular that manufacturers are finding it hard to meet the requirements. Even some of the smartphones such as HTC Desire had to replace the AMOLED screens with S-LCD screens due to the shortage. Curved LED displays are the new revolution in the generation of modern LED displays. They provide a 3D viewing experience to the user without any need of special goggles or anything else.

LED displays are also very popular in outdoor applications such as sports LED displays in stadiums and playgrounds. One of the main reasons for LED displays being used as outdoor sport displays in playgrounds is that they can provide extremely bright display. Thus, a user can watch everything on the screen even in the middle of the day when the sunlight is at its best. The slim design and low power consumptions also makes them a good choice for sports LED displays.
