Celebrate the Rural Spirit of Rakhi with Kajari Purnima

India is a land of diverse culture and traditions where rituals change along with the landscape every two hundred miles. The festival of rakhi which celebrated in western India as a symbol of kingship has a different significance for people in central India belonging to the agricultural community. They celebrate this day as Kajari Purnima, seeking the Lord’s blessing for a good harvest and well being of their family.

Shravan Purnima which is also known as Kajari Purnima in many parts of central India like Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar hold special significance for farmers with a son. In some remote areas of central India, couples blessed with a son only have the right to observe this festival. This festival is extremely significant for farmers as it signifies the beginning of the sowing season for wheat and barley, both of which are regarded as two of the most profitable crops for a farmer in Central India.

Farmers on this day worship the Goddess of prosperity known as Goddess Bhagavathi and seek her blessing for a good crop. The preparation of this festival starts on the 9th day after Kajari Amavasha which is also a no moon day and continues till the 9th day thereof known as Kajri Navami ( Navami signifying 9th). From Kajari Navami onwards the celebrations and rituals carry on till Kajari Purnima which is generally about 5 days later on the full moon day.

As a part of the celebrations on the Navami day, women go to a field and get some mud to sow the wheat which is also known as Kajri. The mud and wheat are kept in conical cups made from leaves and these cups are then placed in the in the interior part of the house which is free from moisture or sunlight. Before placing the cops the women folks of the house take adequate care to wash the room with mud and cow dung.

The room is decorated with rice rangoli in various patterns and designs featuring a child in a cradle, a mongoose or women with a pitcher. The cup is worshipped on a daily basis for the next seven days till the auspicious day of Kajari Purnima or the full moon day.

On the evening of the full moon day, once the moon is visible in the sky in the women carry out a procession with the leaf cups on their heads chanting songs of worship as they move to a nearby water body where the cups are eventually immersed. It is a custom for the women too fast all day on the occasion of Kajri Poornima and also prays for the well-being of their son.

Kajari Purnima is also known as Nariyal Purnima Rakhi Purnima in the western part of the country and there's Avani Avittam in the southern part of the country.
